Captain's Log: Sulu

I didn't see another thread for this comic, if there is another one, my apologies. Did anyone else pick this up?

I read it yesterday. I enjoyed it. Though I felt the plot was a little rushed, and I would've liked to see more of Sulu's crew, but I liked the story and the Tholians being featured. I would like to see more Sulu adventures. Does anyone know what other captains are going to be featured in the Logs, and how often the Logs are going to come out?

I got it and liked it, but was disappointed with not seeing more of Sulu's crew. I was also hoping to see some continuity with the previous Sulu adventures from treklit, but I know that isn't something the IDW has felt was a priority. I missde seeing Cutler (or Chekov), Chapel, Tuvok, and Akaar. But I still recommend it as a good one-shot story .

I enjoyed the comic, too, but am I the only one who wishes Sulu would get to do something other than fence all the time? In just about every novel or comic featuring Sulu, that's all he seems to do. It would be like Kirk answering every challenge with a flying leg kick. I recall a DC Trek comic Takei wrote, and I don't think he was doing any swordplay there. Still, a good story, but I did hope to see Chekov as first officer.

Actually he has a fencing scene on p. 21 of that DC comic and a pike fight on pp. 46-7 (and on the cover). However, he also has a doomed romance and saws Chekov in half in a magic show.

Glad to hear fencing wasn't the only thing in that issue. It's been a long time since I read it, but I remember enjoying it.

The only thing I didn't like was that there wasn't an establishing shot of Excelsior until page 11. It sort of assumes that every reader has seen Star Trek VI and/or the VOY episode "Flashback" to know what's going on.

Otherwise, I thought it was a good Sulu adventure and it read and "felt" like one, IMO...

I picked this up today.

Story was fine. No complaints there.

The art could have been better in places . There were a couple of shots where the Excelsior looked out of proportion. Page 20 being a big case in point. But the Bridge looked mostly good. I would have liked to have seen a stardate and be able to place it within the greater universe of stories.

But biggest bug bear for me in this issue was the graphics that appear on the Excelsior bridge. The MSD display that of the Enterprise-A and not the Excelsior. Some consoles had 3 levels of monitors rather than 2. And in some cases they had screens where console controls should be. There was even a TNG graphic in the Original series movie era!

Call it nitpicking, but these kinds of details detract from the overall product for me. It's as if no-one even cared about how thinsg should look. I personally like to see things in the Trek universe looking accuratly as they did on the Cinema/TV screen. Very few Trek comics have ever got this kind of thing right. This comic got some things very, very wrong.

I'm hoping that there will be more comic adventures for Sulu and the Excelsior. But I also hope more care is taken in getting the details right.
