He was a starving stage actor in Canada. At that point in time, in fact, he was quoted as saying he hated even hearing the words "Chef Salad." It was often the only thing he could afford to eat on a regular basis before he moved to LA.

Fruit salad, actually.

Haven't read that book, actually. I just remember the interview in Making of Star Trek (my Stephen Whitfield), and remember him saying Chef Salad. I'll have to find my copy and check.
