So hopefully to those people, it means something when I say I did NOT feel like Captain Marvel pushed any sort of feminist agenda at all. They didn't do what Supergirl does, and make men weak and evil to make the main character look stronger.

If you consider Captain Marvel some sort of feminist statement, then I think it was one done the right way.

They didn't throw her gender in people's faces at all--she wasn't a hero because she was a woman. She was a hero that happened to be a woman.

She was kind of what Supergirl should be.

It was a lot more like Wonder Woman in that regard.

This movie was a story, not a statement, and though Brie Larson made some unfortunate comments before the movie, the movie itself is what it should be--a comic book movie.

I thought the movie had a great mix of humor and serious. In fact, I think DC can learn a thing or two. This was a better Superman style movie than the ones they made.

With some tweaking, there would have been a great Superman story. I wish Man of Steel followed this tone.

It's going to be interesting where they go from here in Endgame. Will they explain Carol's lack of aging?

Is she just going to be used as a means to save everything to the detriment of other heroes?

We will see, but this was a terrific lead in to Endgame, and I look forward to it.

When asked why Nick Fury never summoned Carol Danvers home before infinity War, Kevin feige essentially asks, "well, who says that he didn't? Just because we haven't seen it yet doesn't mean it didn't happen."

It would be kind of interesting to see an entire trilogy of movies centered on Carol Danvers that all took place before her appearance in Endgame.

Gave it a B+. Solid, enjoyable, fun, though a little lacking in substance and I can't help but feel that the humour rather undercut any dramatic stakes the movie might have had.
Indeed, I actually thought it might have been better to cut the fight with Ronan's forces at the end and kept the third act more personal. Yes, the zap, boom, smash stuff was fun and pretty but it felt like such an afterthought, whereas the Yon-Rogg confrontation felt a little under served.

Coulson was in it a lot more that I'd thought he'd be, so that was nice. The 90's callouts were OK, but nothing that elicited much more than a wry smirk and not as much nostalgia as I would thought (not 100% sure if that's actually a bad thing.) My biggest complaints are probably the uneven pacing and...I don't want to say "bland" exactly, but there was a certain something missing in the cinematic style department. Could be the editing, or could just be the way it was shot. Competent, workman like, but not much flare outside of the memory montages.

Random thoughts: -
  • So Captain Marvel's powers come from the space stone? Makes sense in the context of the MCU's version of the lore and the nature of her powers.
  • Honestly, I feel like Goose has been oversold to me. He did not steal the show (and I'm very much a cat person.) One of the reasons I'm increasingly trying to go into these things as blind as possible.
  • Hey, anyone remember all that fuss people made about the green uniform and how it wasn't Captain Marvel's "real" uniformed and is obviously going to ruin the whole movie? Just me? OK then! ;)
  • I like how the MCU version of Mar-Vell wasn't an elite Kree super-soldier, but a scientist. Not some other hero that makes Carol seem like a derivative iteration.
  • It also makes it a lot less weird for her to use the name as the basis for her codename (especially since her old callsign have now been collectively taken!)
  • I like the way the flipped the Skrulls as being the victims of a pogrom for defying the Kree Empire than just another equally violent race out to conquer the galaxy. Honestly, for most of the third act I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and for Talos to pull a double-cross. I guess that's what happens when you cast Ben Mendelsohn: misdirection via typecasting!
  • The whole "light speed engine" thing is a little perplexing. I mean we've seen ships jump across whole galaxies without too much trouble. The speed of light is really a snail's pace by comparison. I know from this and GotG2 that the jump points appear to be at least somewhat fixed in space and not a function of the ships themselves (which raises several other questions) but are ships really all that slow that they can't even get close to lightspeed?

It's definitely a MCU movie. In good and in bad. I think that I would most compare it to Doctor Strange. Already accomplished person gets great power. As opposed to Captain America or Spider-Man where the hero is a nobody before getting their powers.

I think the key factor you maybe missing there is that Carol wasn't a "gifted" individual before she got powers, she was a bloody determined one who had the deck stacked against her every step of the way. There's more Steve Rogers in there than Tony Stark or Doctor Strange.

Still wondering how Mar-Vell/Lawson got the Tesseract but other than that I loved it. I am glad they kept Mar-Vell in some fashion. I wish we could have gotten more of Annette in the film. She was great in both parts. The change in the nature of the Kree-Skrull war could prove interesting. Whether they are lying remains to be seen but if not they could make some cool allies.

The presence of the Tesseract does raise some questions, but then our current understanding of events skips over about half a century. So anything could have happened between Howard recovering it in '45 and Mar-Vel using it in '89. Perhaps at one point "Lawson" worked for/with Howard and got the cube from his vaults, either willingly as part of Pegasus (which was still going in 'Avengers' and directly involved SHIELD alongside NASA & USAF) or just half-inched it.
I mean she was working with a bunch of Skrull refugees, so between their talents and her technology it's not like stealing it would have been a massive undertaking, if it came to that.

Saw it. Solid B+ to A-

Good contribution to the MCU. Brie Larson was charming and funny in the lead. Loved the 90's music throwbacks. Lots of awsome Samuel L. "M.F." Jackson.

Overall: really enjoyed it.
 
Also, something I've noticed before and again here is how these are becoming 'event' movies like SW used to be. Enjoyed that aspect of it as well.
 
I've seen a lot of confusion over the tesseract, and I think it all makes perfect sense. The Tesseract is in SHIELD possession and kept at Project Pegasus. Mar-Vell is a top scientist at Project Pegasus. She snatched it away for her experiments, and it got left on the space station. After Goose hacked it up, Fury returned it to Pegasus where it remained until Avengers.

Underpowered? She seem incredibly overpowered for most of the movie.
If she was in Infinity War, there wouldn’t be much of a problem. :)
 
There was a limiter chip on her neck.

She was limited before the chip was removed and unlimited after the chip was removed.

Bniary powers are when she is powered by a white hole.

The Tesseract is more powerful than a white hole?

How did the cube get from the Red Skull's hand, to Project Pegasus, in just 35 years?

Oh, sure, if you're going to use logic and facts to explain things, there will be no end to sense in this thread. Is that really a world you want to live in, is it?
 
I did like it and thought it had some good and funny stuff here and there; but I still give it a 'C' as the hero 'Captain Marvel' just doesn't strike a good note for me in this film. And it's not because she's female; I just think none of the Villains presented much of a challenge for her as her power level is just off the charts in comparison. I like to see my comic book heroes challenged, and she really wasn't here.

It was a nice little setup/intro for the time she will be challenged (by Thanos) in Avenger IV.

Also, I have to wonder:

- In the 22 or so years since, she has yet to return to Hala and take out/modify the Kree Supreme Intelligence?

- Back in 2012 Fury did feel Loki invading Earth (with the assistance of Thanos) a large enough emergency to use the Beeper?

- Did it really take 22 years for her to find the Skrulls a new Homeworld?

(Again, that's how the it appears to me as she's never been mentioned by ANYONE in the MCU before Fury hitting the Beepr in Avengers Infinity War.)
 
She hasn’t aged as well. Is her powers keeping her young?
He probably thought the Avengers were enough to handle Loki.

It confused me at first, but I think the idea is that an engine that would let you travel faster than light anywhere (and not just at jump points) would prevent the Kree from following.
 
Sam Jackson looks younger here than in Die Hard with a Vengeance. A film that actually came out in 1995.
 
'Cause of the hairline. He was already losing it in '95. It's kind of a funky hairline though, one I don't remember him having in reality. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) )
 
So, in the first trailer, Fury has a line about how he was thinking of hanging it all up, inferring that he was thinking of leaving SHIELD. That never showed up anywhere in the movie did it?

Also, how does Fury go to go to the bar where he met Carol? Carol saw the bar in her buried memories, but what brought Fury there?

3 possibilities.

1. Gate points are created naturally by the universe. A younger species just has to observe space and figure out a little math and engineering to link space.

2. An ancient race, possibly very long lived, or just very stubborn, built a very large self sustaining gate system millions of years ago, laying gates about the universe, at sublight speeds.

3. An ancient race, which had ftl engines, or the tesseract, or something just as powerful like a rainbow bridge, built a large self sustaining gate system.

4. In either case of 2 or 3, the ancient aliens, or their surviving automatons, could still be alive, and at work enbiggening the artificial gate system deeper out into the universe.

5. My spell check thinks that I want to type "actress" whenever I type "tesseract". :)
