Captain Marvel (2019)

Anyway, there's entirely too much meta discussion. How about, instead of discussing what other people think of the movie, we discuss the movie? I thought it was a lot of fun. It's not the best movie, but that comparison to Ant-Man is comparable. There were a lot of really good moments throughout. It had great spectacle, good humor, lots of wonderful inside references. It changed things from the comics but, every time it did, there was a clear comic book inspiration and I thought it was for the better. I'll give it some time before I give spoilers. I will say, I knew some, was aware but not confident about others, and didn't know all of them. I thought it handled all of them well.
At this point most of the characters in the comics have been changed over so many times that there really is no one definitive canon for most of them. Also there's a spoiler thread for this movie already.

Then you haven't been reading the actual reviews. It's being criticized by both men and women. Here's one of them from a female reviewer..

Sounds like a pretty well rounded review to me.

For the record, I don't let reviews influence my movie watching. But to simply wave your hand and dismiss them as "women haters" is disengenous.

Megan Basham is a right-wing anti-feminist. She praised Knocked Up as an anti Pro-Choice movie. If it has an independent strong woman who doesn't need a man to be successful, then it goes against her belief system.

Just to be clear, that's not how Rotten Tomatoes works. 83% means 83% of critics thought the movie was worth at least 3 out of 5 stars. In other words, the movie was at least good. They used to show the average score as well, but I can't find that. If you want that number, Metacritic would be the best place to go. Right now, it's at 65, which is comparable to the first Ant-Man at 64. The only site that provides a statistically meaningful audience score is Cinemascore, but that's not done yet.

Thanks, I learned that since. :)

All this feminism nonsense is ridiculous. The movie has none of that. It’s just your run of the mill superhero movie.

Haven't seen the movie yet, will go tomorrow. But even though I found your phrasing a bit harsh, I am curious to see how inflated the entire 'feminist standpoint' this movie supposedly makes really is.
I don't mean that in a negative way. What I'm curious about is, is this just a superhero movie with a female lead or a statement? And I kinda doubt Marvel would actually make a statement. As much as people complained about Black Panther, I found nothing about that movie screaming 'statement' to me, just a superhero movie with a big african-american cast, because the movie is set in an African country. There you go.

It's so easy to talk about political agenda's these days, that some people forget that not everyone has one. If anything, I'd say its a financial agenda, because Marvel is well aware of what's going on in the world today and knows what will sell.

The Movie is undeniably about empowerment and has a big emancipation moment for Carol.
But at no point it diminishes anyone for their gender.
It‘s a very personal story embedded in a galactic war story.

Overcoming her "friend" near the end, didn't have anything to do with sexism.

If anything, that was about daddy issues.

All these pages of hand wringing over whether it’s a female empowerment or female agenda movie and it ends up being slightly above average. It certainly is not in the league of Black Panther which I truly enjoyed.

Are there any MCU-Movies one should rewatch again, before seeing Captain Marvel?
Nothing is required - particularly if you've seen them at least once. That being said, I would say it draws most heavily on Avengers and the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Her calling Brie Larson wooden while praising a mannequin like Gal Gadot tells me all I need to know.

^ It's not an entirely irrelevant review. I'd rather not take the female/girl power posturing too personally. I don't equate boy power with comic male heroes either. Role models in my opinion shouldn't be unattainable fantasies. That being said flaws add light and shade and she is a tad one note.

That quote from the reviewer was a little funny: "... every character in the film is able to upstage Carol on the personality meter, including the cat." Meow

It’s mostly a bunch of sexist men pitching a fit because the movie stars a woman and this is somehow an attack on them. But they’re delusional idiots and should be ignored like the spoiled children they are.

It's a bit more complicated than that. As there was no such outrage at the movie Wonderwoman nor is there against Alita Battle Angel released alongside it.

I don't have a horse in this race anymore as I'm so sick to death of both sides of it.

But let's have some context in these posts, they got offended at Brie Larson and the comments she made about how white male reviewers shouldn't have an opinion on a primarily Black movie

As for captain marvel itself, is it an awful movie full of "virtue signalling" or is it one of the most amazing marvel movies ever made and Brie deserves an Oscar?

As usual the truth lies somewhere in between. It's a decent origin story, no more no less.
