Captain Marvel (2019)

If you're so convinced that your views are going to be universally dismissed as racist, misogynistic bigotry then perhaps you should think and consider how you're putting these views across

Categorical BS. I've never ever seen a case where one of these "protected" works like Ghostbusters, Last Jedi, etc... is criticized in a scholarly way (think Red Letter Media's epic essay on Last Jedi) and the critics aren't still merely shrugged off as racist, misogynistic, bigots.

Some people insist that you're just not entitled to dislike a work if it features women or minorities. To dislike is to commit an Orwellian thought-crime.

What a total pantload.

You must not have been paying attention to all of the discussions about The Last Jedi that have been posted on this board.

Nonsense. The internet and traditional media are absolutely brimming with dislike for the works you mentioned, both in genuine film critique and in thinly veiled bigotry. If you're having issues, you might want to consider which category your commentary falls into.

Yeah, I'm afraid you lost me when you put "Red Letter Media" and "scholarly" in the same sentence. Have fun dying on this hill though! ;)

But I still won't see either until they hit DVD. A fact that should please Brie Larson no end since she's made it clear she doesn't want my money anyway........
I wouldn't want to intrude on your safe space.

Perhaps you should wait until you're done sobbing in a corner about Brie Larson being a meanie to you* before you start accusing anyone else of needing a safe space, champ.

* And not even understanding what she actually said.

When it comes to "review-bombing" dismissing it as fans simply expressing their views on a particular film is rather ridiculous as key individuals driving the attempt to "review-bomb" a film are open and public as to their motivation (which is often misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc.)

I think because GHOSTBUSTERS '16 underperformed at the box office it only empowered those trolls to keep doing the same thing for other tent pole projects with female leads. The thing is, GHOSTBUSTERS '16 was just a bad movie. Even if it had the surviving original cast it still would have been bad. Meanwhile, THE LAST JEDI and DISCOVERY were hits.

Though ironically, SOLO, the only male lead film of the new STAR WARS films, is the only one to underperform. I guess audiences want more leading women in blockbuster films!

:nyah:

^ Yes.

I didn't like The Last Jedi and made my thoughts on it well known around the board and I never got accused of being racist or sexist, because none of my criticism revolved around saying racist or sexist things. It's really not rocket science.

Does that mean someone can't occasionally misunderstand or misrepresent someone unfairly? Of course not, but those are the exception, not the rule, and you're trying to make them commonplace when they're not to cover for not having to make any kind of self-reflection on how you represent yourself here.

Perhaps the reason you keep running into these kind of problems is that you're always floating around topics involving racism and sexism and greater inclusiveness in film and TV and making dismissive comments about it like it's not an actual issue, or you throw out buzzwords like PC. And from that people start to make assumptions about where you stand on certain issues, especially when you start having an exceptional amount of opposition to the film or TV show you haven't even seen yet that revolve around its casting of more women and people of color.

I thought the new Ghostbusters was rather mediocre, but it had nothing to do with it having a gender-swapped cast, and I waited until I had actually seen the damn film before I made that assessment. I was actually looking forward to seeing what Jones, Wiig, and McKinnon could do since I was a fan of theirs from SNL, and McCarthy is good when given the right material, but hey, it wasn't as funny as I'd hoped. It happens, with most comedies in fact.

I didn't consider it a personal affront to my manhood to recast the movie with women, any more than I do when they recast Guess Who Coming to Dinner? with a black family welcoming home the daughter's white boyfriend instead of the reverse. Why would that bother me?

So you go on pretending that it's all some irrational attack and that your constant negative attitude and dismissiveness don't play any part in the reaction you get, and you're going to continue having the same problems over and over again and wondering why this keeps happening to you.

I felt that way too. BRIDEMAIDS was one of the few films to get me laughing out loud. The remake having that same cast and crew behind it was a big part of what made me look forward to it. Gender swapping was a non-issue. Yet losers like Nerdrotic seem to believe that was the big problem with the film, or any other big franchise like STAR WARS, STAR TREK, and DOCTOR WHO, and only seem to focus on that.

I'm not sure I understand what this is about. Is this about Brie Larson's comment where she said that she'd like journalists and critics who aren't white and male also to be included in her press events in addition to those who are white and male?

Wow, this is what this is all about? I can't even bring myself to be sarcastic over this, anyone who finds this offensive is truly pathetic.

A lot of white men are deeply insecure, they need constant reassurance that they’re better than everyone else and are special. They used to get this because of how sexist, racist and bigoted society was, mostly because of them. Now that’s fading away and the younger ones are realizing that they won’t get their chance to be like dad and grandpa and they’re angry. They constantly try to claim everyone else is the problem. Women are sexist because they want more representation because that’s stealing from white men. Other races are racist for wanting more representation for the same reason and LGBTQ people are the real bigots because they want representation and to not be insulted and denied rights. They’re all a threat to these pathetic weak men and they all lash out in different ways. The geek ones are the most pathetic and attack movies and games. But it’s all the same shit about how they’re the real victims. Like how men are trying the claim that they’re the real victims of #MeToo, Christians are the real victims of LGBTQ people and racists are the victims of other races.
