Yeah, I've always enjoyed TNG's
"Chain of Command" episodes
. There HAD to be 24th Century Captains who understood that sometimes military action IS required; and I always felt that Jellico did come off (although gruff) as professional, and it was out TNG main cast who came off looking unprofessional GIVEN THE SITUATION - ie:
Riker -
- Not implementing the 4th shift AS ORDERED by Jellico basically because he talked with the shift Supervisors and they told him it would be a problem (Hell, in that scene even Picard gave him a look of: "WTF Will? He IS NOW Captain of the Enterprise; don't expect me to bail you out here...")
Geordi -
- First complaining that Jellico's requested changes means they'll have to shut down some science labs.
- Then when Jellico says Engine efficiency can be improved -- Geordi's reply is: "Hey they meet Star Fleet specs.."
- Later when he complains about having to do double shifts to fix things because Jellico pulled an inspection during a maintenance cycle; and further asks Riker to see maybe if he can get Captain Picard to intercede and talk to Jellico - AND RIKER ACTUALLY DOES GO TO PICARD'S QUARTERS TO DO THIS

(But to Riker's credit he comes to his senses when he sees that Picard shouldn't need to deal with this crap as he has enough to worry about.)
Troi -
- The look on her face when she realizes she won't have the Captain's ear her; or be able to manipulate him the way she does Picard; and further after she's asked to dress in Ship's Uniform when on her Bridge duty shift. (And Jellico was right in that there was no time for a Honeymoon with the crew given the situation - and Counselor Troi SHOULD have at least been Emphatic enough to realize that was the case.)
I know a lot of hardcore TNG fans believe Jellico's attitude was the issue here - but sorry, to me it always showed that the 1701-D Senior Officers were soft, and used to just doing things there own way; and Star Fleet Service should always be 'enjoyable'; and when it wasn't they whine like children. (Yes, when the chips are down and they're in trouble the pull together and did that - but here they should have seen that Jellico WAS preparing the ship to avoid such a situation once they got to Cardassian space.)
