Captain Lorca's "catchphrase"

Probably just the way he delivered the line, but it came off very rude. :)
He was a far more militaristic captain than we're used to. I've heard people say he was also the most realistic, and that he was actually the one in the right between he and Riker. I don't know that I agree. Both were wrong and right.

You know I've not actually heard that said very often, but watching the episode I do tend to see the support for Riker being more about familiarity with the character and sympathy with his loyalty to our favourite captain than him actually contributing much of value.

Jellico had to deal with the big picture and treated saving Picard as a desirable (and as it happened entirely achievable) secondary objective. Had Spock been first officer there wouldn't have been an issue, he would have entirely agreed with Jellico's assessment of the priorities.

There's no question that Jellico was a highly competent captain.

Yeah, I've always enjoyed TNG's "Chain of Command" episodes. There HAD to be 24th Century Captains who understood that sometimes military action IS required; and I always felt that Jellico did come off (although gruff) as professional, and it was out TNG main cast who came off looking unprofessional GIVEN THE SITUATION - ie:

Riker -
- Not implementing the 4th shift AS ORDERED by Jellico basically because he talked with the shift Supervisors and they told him it would be a problem (Hell, in that scene even Picard gave him a look of: "WTF Will? He IS NOW Captain of the Enterprise; don't expect me to bail you out here...")

Geordi
-
- First complaining that Jellico's requested changes means they'll have to shut down some science labs.

- Then when Jellico says Engine efficiency can be improved -- Geordi's reply is: "Hey they meet Star Fleet specs.."

- Later when he complains about having to do double shifts to fix things because Jellico pulled an inspection during a maintenance cycle; and further asks Riker to see maybe if he can get Captain Picard to intercede and talk to Jellico - AND RIKER ACTUALLY DOES GO TO PICARD'S QUARTERS TO DO THIS :rommie: (But to Riker's credit he comes to his senses when he sees that Picard shouldn't need to deal with this crap as he has enough to worry about.)

Troi -
- The look on her face when she realizes she won't have the Captain's ear her; or be able to manipulate him the way she does Picard; and further after she's asked to dress in Ship's Uniform when on her Bridge duty shift. (And Jellico was right in that there was no time for a Honeymoon with the crew given the situation - and Counselor Troi SHOULD have at least been Emphatic enough to realize that was the case.)

I know a lot of hardcore TNG fans believe Jellico's attitude was the issue here - but sorry, to me it always showed that the 1701-D Senior Officers were soft, and used to just doing things there own way; and Star Fleet Service should always be 'enjoyable'; and when it wasn't they whine like children. (Yes, when the chips are down and they're in trouble the pull together and did that - but here they should have seen that Jellico WAS preparing the ship to avoid such a situation once they got to Cardassian space.)

1000% this. I thought was the only who saw Jelico as being no problem whatsoever. Even I first saw that episode in highschool (reruns) I remember thinking "this is a semi military organization yes?" Like do what you're told to do. Heck it's not even a military thing, it's a listen to your boss even if he's a hard ass thing. Unless it's something illegal follow the orders. In other words, to the senior staff, suck it up buttercup :rommie:

The whole thing was a bit odd. Isn't the Enterprise supposed to be where the best officers in the fleet go?

Honestly, with the exception of perhaps Picard. If you put that senior staff on a run down old ship it'd be a story about misfits and underachievers

You mean the Captian Picard who LOST/ABANDONED the U.S.S. Star Gazer because he let a Ferengi Cargo ship fire first; and then refused to return fire (to save his ship and what was left of his crew) until his ship was so heavily damaged he felt the need to abandon it.
^^^
Oh, and about that decision to abandon ship...That was premature too it seems as the Ferengi found and salvaged the ship.

So yeah, when you say 'misfits and underachievers' -- given his Command history, IMO, Picard fits right in. ;)

I don't know if you have heard of "abridged" series but theyre a huge thing on YouTube. What happens is they take animes and dub over them with new lines and re edit whole episodes to put a self seeing comedic spin on things. The most popular one DBZ abridged has dozens of episodes each with millions of views. This needs to be done with tng :guffaw:

His catch phrase should be "go fuck yourself, or you Mom, I don't care."

I thought worse of both Picard and Riker after "Chain of Command". It was clear they were running a very lax operation.
