Captain Kirk heading to space.. for real!

According to FAI rules at the time, Gagarin's flight wasn't a real spaceflight.
They changed the rules later.
Gagarin didn't have any control over his capsule, and was just a passenger. Was he a tourist then, and not a real cosmonaut?

You don't see the difference between someone who dedicated himself to expanding mankind's presence in space, was a highly trained professional and integral part of a space program and was the first man in space vs a multi millionaire who one day decided to drop his daily interest on a rocket ride, contributing nothing to any mission or advancement?

Being a passenger on a plane doesn't make you an aviator. Being a *passenger* on a rocket doesn't make you an astronaut.

I love Shatner's raw emotional speech.

Seeing Shatner go to space at the age of 90 is one of the best things I've seen in 2021. Complete respect to the man, good on him. Like Captain Kirk he never shies away from adventure. The first Star Trek Captain and the first Star Trek Captain to be in space. Doesn't get any better than that. Proud to be a Star Trek fan.

I could imagine what he was thinking when the spacecraft launched. "OMG! This is happening! OMG! Everything is shaking! OMG! We're going faster and faster and faster! OMG! The sky is so blue! OMG! The sky is turning into blackness! OMG! Are we going to die??? OMG! Wow! Space... OMG! This is... Oh My... I... can't... describe this... I have to share this with my daughters! OMG! I have to share this... with my grandchildren!!!"

On the return...

"OMG! This is happening! OMG! Everything is shaking! OMG! We're going faster and faster and faster! OMG! The sky is so red! OMG! The sky is turning into blue! OMG! Are we going to die??? OMG! Wow! Earth... OMG! This is... Oh My... I... can't... describe this... I have to share this with my daughters! OMG! I have to share this... with my grandchildren!!!"

This was truly awesome. The man has lived 5x more than most human beings ever hope to... in terms of just human experience and impact. I don't care what anyone says...the guy is an absolute legend.

Wonder if he went wooooooooo woooooooo in there as well XD

again, on the flight, what was his contribution? how do you define what a passenger is, if simply being there in a thing that flies itself does not fit? :p
Gagarin did critical things including radio comms with ground and monitoring systems (and himself)

Gagarin also orbited the earth with an apogee of 327km and reached orbital velocity and thus reentry from orbital velocity.
...did the blue origins crew not handle comms? XD
