According to FAI rules at the time, Gagarin's flight wasn't a real spaceflight.
They changed the rules later.
Gagarin didn't have any control over his capsule, and was just a passenger. Was he a tourist then, and not a real cosmonaut?![]()

The drone footage from the liftoff and the booster landing looked so perfect they looked CG--"The special effects here are way better than they used to be..."

Reminds me of the Apollo 13 launch footage from the 1995 flick.....not the 1970 launch.......holy shit that movie is 26 years old.The Blue Origin liftoff always does have that really good video game CGI appearance to it.
again, on the flight, what was his contribution? how do you define what a passenger is, if simply being there in a thing that flies itself does not fit?You don't see the difference between someone who dedicated himself to expanding mankind's presence in space, was a highly trained professional and integral part of a space program and was the first man in space vs a multi millionaire who one day decided to drop his daily interest on a rocket ride, contributing nothing to any mission or advancement?
Being a passenger on a plane doesn't make you an aviator. Being a *passenger* on a rocket doesn't make you an astronaut.
...did the blue origins crew not handle comms? XDGagarin did critical things including radio comms with ground and monitoring systems (and himself)
Gagarin also orbited the earth with an apogee of 327km and reached orbital velocity and thus reentry from orbital velocity.
