CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I think it will to be a joke with him just wearing that costume for one scene, and he will put on the official suit later on for the rest of the movie.

from what I can see of his leather jacket and blue helmet version, He's wearing at least the shirt portion under the leather jacket.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

While I appreciate the literal translation from page to screen and the actor wears it well, the costume still looks cheesy in live-action, especially in regards to what the character is suppose to be (a soldier). Comic fanboys might love it; general moviegoers will laugh it off the screen.

That must be why that first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve flopped so horribly.

Oh, wait...

That was the 70s, man.

And the same conversations were going on then. I remember it well. People swore it couldn't be done. That no one would take it seriously.
But the filmmakers took it seriously. So it worked.

^And its most recent use in Superman Returns was also a massive hit that gave us three...wait.

They didn't use it in SR. They used a muted bastardy of it. They had no confidence in the source material. And it showed.

Clearly, you didn't bother to read my earlier post. Here, I'll quote if for you (I bolded the relevant phrases so you can follow along):

Don't get me wrong. I love Cap. He's my favorite superhero. However, what is drawn and looks cool on paper doesn't always translate to live action in a movie made for mass audiences. Very few characters are able to pull that off. Cap isn't one of them.

With Superman, it works given who he is and what the character is capable of.

It should also be noted that, going by your logic, the earlier Cap movie should have been a wide success because the costume was like the comic counterpart. It wasn't. In fact, it wasn't even released in theaters in the US. But the costume didn't make the difference there (actually, in most of the film, he either wasn't in it or was covering it up). In any event, what the character wears bears little, if any relation to the quality of the film.

And there is also my claim (which you ignored) that for a movie for general audiences (not only comic fans), a character wearing a costume like that, who is suppose to be a solider during one of the most violent conflicts in history, is going into battle wearing tights. I'm sorry, but that breaks the suspension of disbelief to far for a mass audience.

Love the USO costume, and especially the idea of him having to start out as a sideshow propaganda tool the military apparently doesn't have much faith in.

Don't know the Captain America history very well, but it's an awesome idea and a great way to get us rooting for him.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

The USO costume and the chorus girls is great! :rommie:

I saw some old movie exactly like that - Rockettes, Gold Diggers, Irving Berlin songs...there was some kind of message at the end about buying war bonds...wish I could dig up something on YouTube on it.

This sums up my feelings on the whole changing comic book character's costumes for the movies. Comic books and movies are two very different (but sometimes interconnecting) mediums, and there is alot that you can do in comics that would work in one, but not the other. And no matter how much it upset people, you have to do what's appropriate for the medium.
Oh, and I was just looking at the Marvel Comics Database, and it turns out WWII era Captain America wore something very similar to his movie costume in the Ultimate Universe.

Nothing could have saved that movie

I think they pulled it off very well in the 1990 movie. I know, I know... ears. Looks good anyway.

Looks like he's in a cheap rubbersuit. Cap dont wear rubber.

Cap in a gimp suit? Does it come with a ballgag and everything?

I hope this movie does well, but I'm betting that it's fucked in the foreign market - it's fifty years too late for this character to go over internationally without irony.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

^Yeah, I've been very curious what is going to happen with this one in other countries.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I'm trying to think where Cap's going to be especially welcome, outside the States. Parts of Europe...maybe. Australia, perhaps. Japan? Who knows?

OTOH, it's pretty easy to come up with a long list of venues where they can probably restrain their enthusiasm. China, the middle east, Africa, South America...

Oh, and I was just looking at the Marvel Comics Database, and it turns out WWII era Captain America wore something very similar to his movie costume in the Ultimate Universe.

That ultimates universe really doesn't carry much water. I still have What If #23 from 1975, titled "What if Johnny Storm Was a Salami Sandwich," but fortunately they didn't use this as a blueprint for the movie and issue a casting call for cold cuts.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

The Ultimate universe carries as much water as the filmmakers want it to carry. There have been a lot of Ultimate elements used in several Marvel movies (Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury being the most prominent example).

I hope this movie does well, but I'm betting that it's fucked in the foreign market - it's fifty years too late for this character to go over internationally without irony.

The director was already trying to sell to that market early on, with these controversial remarks: " the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing...It’s an international cast and an international story. It’s about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too.”

Additionally, it appears they will be dropping "Captain America" from the title in several markets, and just calling it "The First Avenger" in translation.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

"The First Avenger" is obviously a concession to the foreign market. Getting him out of that rubber flag suit and into something just a tad more muted probably helps too. Marvel does want to make money.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

^Yeah, I've been very curious what is going to happen with this one in other countries.

You guys are overthinking it. Summer popcorn movies (even the arugably smarter ones that are "about something" more than just explosions) succeed by providing action and entertainment value, and this is especially true overseas. Looking at foreign BO, which rewards action movies indiscriminately regardless of content or any "ideas" they may contain, is enough to convince me that the America part of Captain America won't matter one way or the other. Foreign markets don't pay that much attention to what a Hollywood flick is allegdely about.

The more important factor for foreign BO is not to have a lot of talking and backstory getting in the way. That's why Star Trek 09 only did 33% of its box office overseas, versus about 60% and counting for Thor. I'm not getting the sense that Captain America will make that mistake.

Not that I'm criticizing Star Trek 09 for "wasting" time on character and setup, quite the contrary. But they sacrificed some percentage of their profits in doing so. If nationalism is such an off-putting factor overseas, then why did Star Trek - the least nationalistic franchise out there, which presents a future in which nations no longer even exist as political entities - do so poorly?

"The First Avenger" doesn't mean anything more in foreign markets than "Captain America" does. They're trying to boost The Avengers franchise.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

no, star trek 09 failed because us damn furreners recognised it was shit.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Your premise is in error.

It didn't fail - it made lots of money overseas, far more than the previous Star Trek movies. It simply didn't make as much as the studio would like a summer blockbuster to make.

Cripes, it made more in foreign box office than most of the Trek movies totaled during their lifetime runs.

Now that the franchise is better recognized in countries where people previously didn't give a shit about it, the sequel should do even better. :techman:
