CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Here are some shots of CA in the "USO" outfit:

I love it - it's the original comic book design, sans chain mail, and it's cheesy as hell.

Because they were obviously going out of their way to make it look cheesy.
I though this issue was already resolved with this

Happy now?

That's quite a bit closer to the mark, yes. If it looks that good in photographs, I will be happier.

Really puts the lie into Johnston's statements that Captain America's "flag pajamas" wouldn't work onscreen, though, doesn't it?

No, because, as drawn, the comic costume wouldn't work on screen. Same sort of thing with Batman's costume in the comic versus the movie versions (Bat's comic costume wouldn't work onscreen*). The Cap-suit in the promo art, though modeled on the costume, is more like a "Batman Begins"-style version of it (though it looks a bit too modern and would feel out of place (more so) in a 1940s period piece).

*Adam West's costume doesn't count as that show and movie were intentionally made as campy comedies (where a pajama-style suit would work).

That's fan art? I thought it was artwork to promote the upcoming Avengers merchandise.

^ You are right. I didn't read The Avengers thread until afterwards where it was stated as legit. My bad on that.

And here's one of the best pics yet of The Red Skull:

Indeed it is.

I'm very impressed with how 'real' they've made Red Skull look.

I agree with you there. Adam West's costume worked perfectly for what that show was. But it's the easiest thing in the world to go out of your way to make the costume look goofy & laughable. I'm really impressed when the filmmakers find a way to make it look the way it ought to look.

Me too. The Red Skull looks pretty much perfect, and I'm really looking forward to seeing Hugo Weaving play the part. It can't have been easy to sculpt something that looks skull-like over an actor's face. Kudos to the makeup designers.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Seems like Hugo Weaving hasn't actually shown his face in a movie I've seen since the last Matrix film. He must be getting used to it by now. He's reaching Ron Pearlman levels, here.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I've seen pictures from the movie of Hugo Weaving's face, so he appears to show it somewhere along the line.
Which face is Red Skull's mask, and which is his real face? The only Cap comic I've ever read (Ed Brubaker's #1) only showed his Red Skull appearance.

The Red Skull's face is a red skull.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Does he wear a mask in the comics, or is that something they came up with just for the movie?

Originally, he wore a Red Skull mask. He later had his consciousness transferred into a clone body of Steve Rogers. However, a bout with Cap left him horribly disfigured in a manner that resembled his old mask (irony, I guess.) He often wears a mask that makes him look normal in order to blend into society (because a guy with a red skull for a face kinda sticks out.) Since then, though, he's jumped bodies a couple times and is currently residing in an android body which has the disfigured face.

Ah, I see now. Thanks.:bolian:

^ Clearly, the Skull's led a quiet life.

I think that is where we disagree; I don't think they "went out of their way" to make the suit look goofy. If anything, to be the opposite of easy; easy would be to copy and paste from the comic to the screen (note: this isn't intended as a slam).

The costume Cap wears during the USO show appears to have been ripped right from the comic (sans chain mail) and looks to be a perfect reproduction. If anything the USO suit looks goofy, because the costume looks goofy. It works on the page; not so well on the screen.

Nope, since it's not that outfit - it's pretty close to the one he wears in First Avenger, cleaned up and sans suspenders.

It's also promotional art. Don't get too excited.

Yeah, it's one of the most ridiculous get-ups in comics history, just this side of Alan Scott's.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

The USO outfit is a little baggy in the neck, but other than that, it looks they didn't go out of their way to make it look funny.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

The production design of this movie shows an effort to really create a period feel using certain cues - Cap's USO outfit looks like the kind of thing that might actually be manufactured (probably of wool knit, ouch) in the 1940s. Of course the fit is not what modern elastic and synthetic fabrics would permit.

The actual combat costume for the character is a little bit more fantasy - apparently intended to look something like leather and other period materials, but actually pretty sophisticated. Oh, and completely lacking in silly useless detail like chain mail.

Ouch! Still, I think Nightwing's disco look might like a word, and Jean Grey's old look (well, the mask at the very least), and Gambit's... outfit.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

You mean Jean's "Marvel Girl" look, the green minidress?
