I'm reminded of the Mason Verger character from Thomas Harris' novel Hannibal. In the book, he had no skin at all on his face and is described as being like a creature of the deep - all teeth and jaws, or something like that.

For the movie, it proved impossible to create that look (even though they pulled off the scene where Hannibal dined on the brains of the still living corrupt FBI man, played by Ray Liotta) so they had Verger with a skin graft over his face.

I expect the Red Skull to be the villain of the year in movies. And maybe for some time beyond that.

Why? Because he is a villain that looks bizarro/freaky? I'm not sure why that picture makes everyone gush over it so much...

It takes more than looks to make a great villain. Much more. Sure, this Red Skull could become a classic villain. Or he could become a laughingstock. But the actor/script/film will determine that. Not an overly photoshopped press image. Any proclamations of "villain of the year/decade in movies" at this point are ... presumptuous.

I don't know if Red Skull is going to be "the villain of the year". There are going to be some contenders...a certain Ghost Face killer is returning as well. Not to mention you've got Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw in "X-Men: First Class". Mark Strong as Sinestro for "Green Lantern". Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is gonna be up there but it seems like a loaded fan statement to declare him "the villain of the year" just based on a art still.

It would be the other way around. Linear creation of each character and all that.

It takes more than looks to make a great villain. Much more. Sure, this Red Skull could become a classic villain. Or he could become a laughingstock. But the actor/script/film will determine that.

With Hugo Weaving in charge we can be positive based on his track record that half the equation is in the bag.

He looks very cool. "Villain of the Year" does indeed strike me as a wee bit premature, but whatever, a little excess enthusiasm about such things never hurt anyone.

I know nothing about the character, but it looks like his face had the skin ripped off and was then left to heal that way, which is fucking gross, but also kind of awesome.

Actually, it's just a mask in the comics. He looks perfectly normal under it.

Well, it was (even though it was never really drawn simply as a mask as it looked too animated - but that is a common conceit of comics).

However, it has been his real face for nearly 25 years or so after he was exposed to a dose of his Dust of Death and suffered disfigurement in Captain America 350.

What I get for quitting in 1986.

Not quite - the skull-faced skull died and ended up possessing somebody else thanks to a Cosmic Cube. So when last he was seen he had (somebody else's) normal skin and a mask. His daughter is the new red skull but she just has severe burns rather than a proper skull face.

A bit like the Joker, the Skull used dust of death to give his victims a red skull appearance too.

Yes the Skull had been possessing Russian General Alekansder Lukin thanks to the aide of Doctor Faustus who also did some work on Sharon Carter after she was captured (resulting in Sharon shooting Steve "killing" him).

Gabe's been a member of the Howling Commandos since day/issue one. Just suspend any disbelief that idea might engender. This isn't Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan. ( At least I hope it isn't.)

Gabe was recently killed (de-capitated) by Hydra assassin Gorgon in the recent Last Ride of the Howling Commandos arc of Secret Warriors.
