Try TNG season five. I've been watching that season for the first time on Spike this month...whoo, boy. Not that it was bad, but something was truly lacking. I damn near felt like I was watching VOY--and that is not a compliment. Seasons six was a bit better, but season seven got pretty damn dull once TPTb turned it into an ad campaign for DS9 with all the Cardassian stories

I'm not bashing on DS9, but IMO, Cardassians had no business on TNG.
I guess this is going to be more and more common as time goes on and you have all these series out there, with 3 of them that took place in the same approx timeframe, but with more and more viewers having not seen any of it first-run, in order.... But sweety

, the Cardassians were introduced in TNG first - in the
4th season TNG "The Wounded" - that ep airing a full
2 years before DS9's premier. TNG then brought on semi-regular Ensign Ro Laren (who you would be seeing in your viewing of season 5) to begin the Bajoran/Cardassian development, along with Ensign Sito Jax later to further the Bajoran/Cardassian lines. Of course DS9 used this as the initial background material for its show, using Major Kira Nerys as the replacement for Ro, who was originally to have that part on DS9 (but I believe Michelle Forbes was not interested).
And just as a point of reference, TNG's 5th season gave the show (and Star Trek), it's highest ratings of the entire series and all of Trek save for the premier of DS9. And in fact, that was the season when TNG actually became the #1 Nielsen show for 4 weeks in a row - beating out the likes of Monday Night Football, etc., for top honors.
The 5th season was also when Roddenberry died and there was an "In Memorium" tag to Roddenberry at the beginning of TNG "Unification I", which was the first ep to air after his death.
