Can JJ save Trek with Star Trek XII?

The average audience today has the attention span of a goldfish and the intellectual capacity of a bacterium. To keep them interested you need explosions, Lens Flares™, cheesy throwaway oneliners, comic relief characters, product placements, contemporary music, and "badass" villains.
:D Of course, you are right, the age of intelligent people have past and we're all reverting back to cavemen. Sure. :D

The problem is: with today's education, especially at a young age, people are more intelligent then ever before. How does that fit in your theory?

JJ already saved Star Trek. Hell, he brought it back from the dead.
I disagree with this statement. Abrams did a good job but the idea rebooted Star Trek movie with iconic original crew, Kirk, Spock and McCoy was not only enough to ignite the Star Trek fan-base but also general audience as well. Star Trek never needed any saving. It only needed to go back to its roots.

This right here.

yawn...typical self-important fanboy garbage:vulcan:

Did a member of a Star Trek BBS with a photoshopped Orion Slave Girl avatar really just call someone a fanboy?

Yes I did. There are all sorts of fanboys my friend.
And I "belong" to that faction that does not make retarded, self-important statements about the general public's intellectual capacity among other things.
Just because we are all part of the same BBS, it does not make us all the same.

As for the Orion avatar, it has more to do with what I find to be a beautiful female rather than any Star trek fanboy obsession.

I don't believe people are more intelligent these days as in "the ability to reason". Young people aren't less intelligent, but essentially incredibly lazy as a general rule. It isn't the ability to reason that holds them back, but rather the desire to do something that requrires a little work; even if it's just mental work.

I didn't know Star Trek needed saving. :shifty:
I agree. I think JJ just hurt it, badly. :( And I had some hope for this movie... Anyway, now I don't expect anything good from XII. If he surprises me, good, if not, well, more fuel for anger I guess.

The only way JJ could redeem himself in my eyes would be making a DS9 movie, with the original cast.

My experiences are to the contrary; of those I know that solely live off welfare, by far the largest percentage is 40 years of age or older. Of those, a large part have had welfare for more then 10 years. Everybody in their twenties is either finishing their education, hard at work or looking for a job. Not only that, but they crave the experience and income a hard job with long hours bring. For example, older people don't care much for newfangled gadgets, but the younger generation loves them. And they do cost quite a buck if you want to keep up.

Seems to me as if much of the younger generation is very eager to work their behinds off, while (at least a part of) the babyboom generation just want to have enough money to come by and be able to do whatever they please all day.

Of course, experiences vary; there is an appropriate amount of slackers in every generation.

I think you might be a wee bit biased ;)

Awesome avatar, by the way - that's a lovely picture!

Well, it looks like if JJ came out with Trek's equivalent of CITIZEN KANE, you would not have liked it. I guess he'll never be redeemed in your eyes unless he has a nervous breakdown and makes a DS9 movie (about a station that goes nowhere and does nothing). I know I exaggerate a little, but still, DS9 does not lend itself to a major budget movie, sorry.

People always mistakenly think this about the next generation. It's errant nonsense. Folks under thirty - or under twenty - certainly have nothing to apologize for compared to the Boomer generation, and we were the ones who first saw Trek and started this fandom nonsense.

People on geek and fan websites should not post foolish things about how the "general public is dumb" and such. It reinforces the worst stereotypes about skiffy fans, reminding people that there is a reason to mock us and that those stereotypes are rooted in observation and fact.

It's spelled Citizen Kane actually:lol:, but to add on to that why critise(sp?) JJ? I highly doubt anyone here could have done a better job.

Criticize?

Sorry, I'll get me coat... :shifty:

Yes there are in every generation. I am 51 and when I lost my job back in May I have applied for jobs every week and so far not even an interview..when I got my food card (I don't have kids so I can't get welfare) I was told at age 51, I'm virtually unemployable..so there is that factor of society that tells us when we can or can't work..they do nothing to help the self esteem..
