Can a 9 volt battery just explode for no reason?

What was the brand?

I've sworn off Duracell. I've suffered too many leaks from them. Atrocious how often I'll pop open a remote control only to find green and white powder having oozed out the batteries. Never happens with other brands. I wrote to Duracell about it and they responded with "What? We've never heard of this before." Meanwhile, Amazon has so many reviews of people complaining about leaks. I'll never ever buy Duracell again.

They were Tandy branded 9v batteries bought last year when Dick Smith Electronics (DSE) were closing down, they had a whole warehouse full of these things and you can still find them in places like Woofworths and Harvey Norman
