Call of Duty: Black Ops

The hit detection does feel really wonky...

I guess I'll show my ignorance here, perhaps hit detection doesn't mean what I think it does. So I'll just say I'm stupid, can someone explain it to me?

Thanks.

Hit detection is when the game recognizes geometry colliding - a bullet hitting a player, for example. When you feel like you've shot someone and the game doesn't kill them, that's when you get bad hit detection.

Ok, that's kind of what I thought it was. But how much of that is just lag?

A lot of the time it doesn't feel like lag though. Or if it's lag, it's not noticeable at all.

Oh well though, I got my "In the Money" achievement in order to enter that contest so I think I'm done with it for a while anyway.

Well it's entirely possible that I don't really know the difference between me just flat out sucking, and hit detection problems. I guess I just assume anytime I miss, it's because I just missed. Now you're telling me that in addition to my frustration with lag, there MAY be a technical issue with the game. LOL, it's a miracle I ever get a kill.

Finished the SP campaign last night and I had a blast! I really enjoyed it. Love the nazi zombies in what I am assuming is the WH. Overall I really enjoying this game.

The basic problem I'm having vs MW2.... in MW2 if I put a shot on someone, I would get a hitmarker. Now sometimes there's lag and I'd die before my shots registered... but that's about it. In Black Ops I'll be aiming down the sight, perfect aim center mass, fire a bunch of rounds and.... nothing... no hit marker.. no lag where I had really died... just shots that miss for no reason

I will tell you another thing that can cause this, sometimes these games pick hosts who have say a nice big 20meg download connection, but they also have a dire upload speed, so what we get are 16 players all trying to communicate with the host via a upload of 256kbs....and bang, nothing you do seems to register when you pull the trigger, and that kind of thing can be made worse if the host is on the other side of the world to you.

it certainly would be nice if these games incorporated a option to look for games within your region, or just give a list of hosts playing with good connections to you, it would certainly make all the difference compared to this random "don't know where your connection is going to end up" way things have been with these games.

Still we can but persevere, i am enjoying it though and i im loving the new Zombies.:)

I have a lot of hours in COD in general and I like this game on the 360. The issues that are cropping up are being addressed-mainly matchmaking delays. I play MP only and have found the Hardcore TDM to be great fun. One thing that is different in this from MW2-you have to LEARN the guns, one by one, as each is different in effect. I have learned about 5, struggled with a few others and not tried the rest yet. I'm having a grand ol' time playing, let me tell you. About to hit Level 30! Woohoo!

There's no comparing MW2 and black ops. Black ops is by far the more inferior product, I'm really disapointed in this abortion of a game Treyarch put out.

You can have the game search for games closer to your location.

Sometimes works out worse for us in the UK as it matches us up with French people, who always seem to get chosen as hosts, and always have a sucky connection.

I'm playing the 360 version, and yes, the hit detection is questionable (much like W@W), and the connection appears to be intermitent. It started off well, but over the past day or so it's been getting gradually worse, with constant 2 yellow bar connections. Tonight, we could get into games, but we never played the same lobby twice as it kept breaking them up.

Overall, quite happy with the SP campaign. Like MW2 it was fairly short, but, there was plenty of variety in the missions, and it was a decent (if predictable) story.

I strongly suspect that the true longevity of the game thought will be in the zombie mode. I'm glad I got the hardened edition as the classic maps are updated with sharper graphics, and the box spawns BO guns, and a few new mega-weapons (the thunder gun, and a freeze ray).

Dead Ops is great fun, on your own or with mates.

Training mode is great too if you just fancy having a blast without getting wrapped up online.

For me, MP is the weakest part. The maps are all fairly similar, and largely forgettable. The one exception is Cracked, which is a superb map. Beyond that, it's all traditional Treyarch problems; poor hit detection, weak guns, unbalanced weapons (lost count of the number of times I've put a clip into someone only for them to survive and kill me with a single shot from a pistol!), etc.

Is it better than MW2? In some ways yes, in other ways, no. Is it better than CoD4? Not a fucking chance.

I'd score this a 7/10 game.

Hmm thanks for the info guys, gonna hold off getting Black Ops and see if they can fix the multiplayer issues.

Well, I've got to say I started off really liking the singleplayer, but the more I played it the less I liked it. I didn't care much for the way the story was told until near the end. I thought the graphics were a little inconsistent in places, with some areas being almost amazing and others appearing average. There were also some weird glitches, especially in the later levels. The penultimate level that you play from 2 different points of view had some weird stuff going on. When I went through it the second time, all of the bodies from the first time through were standing like statues all over the place.

Probably my biggest complaint though is the AI. Its rather annoying to say the least to see one of your teammates standing shoulder to shoulder with an enemy soldier and not fighting each other. Especially when the enemy is filling you full of lead. Or how about the times when a teammate is crouched down behind a tree stump with an enemy crouched right on the other side. It's hard to have fun when every enemy on screen act like berserkers trying to get to you to the exclusion of everything else. This game ultimately had more moments of frustration and wanting to throw the controller than any I've played recently. Treyarch managed to solve the grenade-spamming problem from WAW, but replaced it with several others. I can't tell you how many times I died with no clue why. Trial and error all the way.

There's also a rather big plot hole concerning Reznov. I don't get in to multiplayer so I have no opinion there. Overall, I think I prefer MOH to this one. MOH was shorter, but I'm kinda looking forward to playing it again. I think Black Ops is gonna get traded towards AC: Brotherhood on Tuesday.

^ I've only played through once, so maybe I missed it, but what plot hole are you referring to?

Well i completed the single player on regular, now i enjoyed the very first mission a lot, i loved the twist and the whole historical links to real people, then the next few levels were a bit meh as i ended up in a flashback to vietnam and i lost exactly why i was there in the whole flashback story thing, so i plodded along until i reached the part of the story concerning the Nazi gas and then the game nudged up gear story wise, and i loved it, some fantastic levels and set pieces.....this game reminds me of singularity, the early part of the game was just a plod along, seen it, done it, then you reach a certain bit and bang, your drawn right into the story.

Multiplayer is a bit hit and miss, i like the fact you now have to earn credits to open rewards for your player card unlike MW2 were you have to do feats of attrition with one weapon at a time if you want to open all the emblems and stuff by getting 1000 kills with one gun and 500 head shots and so on....plus it suffers from the same hit detection issue WAW did.

Now zombies offer two maps this time and it can be a lot of fun, and the game also has the addition of a hidden mini game called dead ops, a smash TV clone that's actually quite good.

So overall not too bad, now i got this game with a £20 PSN card for £45, so it cost me £25, exactly what i think the game is worth.

7/10

I love playing zombies on multiplayer. Most of the time I end up playing with a bunch of idiots who take off and we all end up dead, but quit a few times I played with other strong players and we worked together and put a hurt on the zombies.

Anybody know who that scientist guy is who shows up on higher levels of zombies and messes you up? My team last night had tons of great weapons and a great defensive position then this fool shows up and teleports me down into the basement. As he is running off I am pumping him full of lead, but nothing happens to him.

Is anyone else having trouble joining as a party on the Xbox version? So far, my friends and I are 1 for 3 with trying to join as a group. The first night, we tried a several times before giving up and switching to another game. At least one of us would be left at a menu while maybe one or two would get into a match.

The second night we tried, there were no problems and we were able to play together for a couple of hours. And then last night, it was the same as the first. We just couldn't join as a group and gave up after a half dozen or so tries.

I'm not sure if we're being gated by the progress of someone in the group or not. We had this problem in Modern Warfare 2 occasionally, but it usually lasted for a couple of attempts. If nothing else, we could re-form the party and then get in with no problems. With Black Ops, we try a lot of different stuff, but just can't get in as a group.

Other than that issue, I'm enjoying this game quite a bit. I didn't care for CoD 3, but with World at War and what I've played of Black Ops so far, I like their campaigns a little better than IW's. The multiplayer is generally fun other than the lag/hit detection stuff when I'm able to get on.

Party matchmaking is fooked on the 360 and PS3 versions.

It's supposed to be being addressed in the patch. Released yesterday for the PS3, I would imagine the 360 one won't be too far behind.

Got chopper gunner last night from a care package. Obviously no one in their team had a launcher equiped as I was just left to fly around the map (Firing Range). Due to the small size and the lack of heavy cover, it just destroyed them. Finished 42-10. :techman:
