Call of Duty: Black Ops

I'm on level 8 and so far I love it. Multiplayer is okay pretty much like all the rest. I'm still trying to get the hang of Nazi Zombies.

Overall it is a really good game and I am having fun playing it.

Yeah, "town" is a bit of a stretch. It would be more apt to call it "Nukestreet".

Anyone play with the computer in the game? I think it's the first time I've used a keyboard in an actual 360 game for anything besides typing out a message.

Yeah, Nuketown is an awful map, but since everything in the game looks like a cardboard cutout, Nuketown is wholly appropriate.

Anyway the wager modes are pretty fun... just too bad the core gameplay isn't hooking me. Stick those modes into MW2 along with dedicated servers and I'd be a pig in slop.

Playing the Ante Up wager matches in a lobby full of your mates is great. Fucking each other over with tomahawks on Sticks and Stones is hilarious fun, and never gets old.

The only thing that bugs me when playing with other people is that hardly anyone uses the double-down option, even in the Ante Up matches, where the most you'll lose is 20 points. I mean, come on, for the sake of 20 points, isn't it worth it just to make it a touch more interesting/worthwhile?

I'm loving Combat Training. Sometimes I just want to hop on and shoot stuff without having to deal with idiots online, and this is perfect for that.

I haven't seen anything that says Ante Up, or anything that really involves wagering in any meaningful way. I click wager match, it costs 500, and that's it.... Maybe this is missing in the PC version? I don't know. Seems weird.

Liking the game a little more with the patch. I like some of the maps... feels a bit bigger than MW2, which I like. Aside from the crappy ones of course, like Nuketown... and really all the snow levels I've played on kind of suck.

Played 4.5 hours online, amassed like 90,000 COD points... I wish there was just a button to 'auto buy' as much as it can... I don't care to individually click this stuff. I had to buy my sleight of hand pro upgrade? WTF... that really should be automatic. I also don't like how I have to leave the server to check any of my unlocks. Also the countdown between rounds is a little too quick to check on my contracts and the like reasonably.

Ran into some weird glitches. Once during a gun game or whatever it's called, my character got stuck with his head tilted like 30 degrees to the right. Really weird running around and aiming when everything is on an angle. Lasted for maybe 3 spawns....

In another one, I didn't get the option of selecting my class for the pre-match... and it just left me in observer mode. Pressed ESC, dug around the menus... nothing. In MW2 Choose Class would be there in those weird situations where you got caught in spectator mode by pressing the wrong button.

KDR sitting around 1.6 which is pretty good for me, usually I settle in at about 1.5 with my overly aggressive run n gun style.

Seems the best class so far for me is AK74u, steady aim, marathon, lightweight. Crazy effective. Been using the upgrade that lets you shoot faster too, but I think subbing in extended mags might make more sense. Really no need to ADS with this setup unless it's really long range. Very accurate quake-style.

Oh, and the RC car is fucking hilarious!

Dunno how it is on other systems, but on the 360, when you select Wager match, it takes you to a menu where you can select from 3 different levels of match; Low buy-in games (10 points), Medium buy-in games (1000 points), or High buy-in games (10,000 points). The Low buy-in one is called Ante Up - it allows party chat, and allows you to pick a game type. The other two don't allow party chat, and the game type is chosen randomly.

I have a general question for anyone who cares to answer. I was in a core team deathmatch yesterday with a couple of guys who (at least compared to me) were really good. One was like 22/1 and the other 24/3 K/D ratio at the end of the game. And it struck me that this game would be a lot more fun if you could get matched up with people of similiar skill levels, but I can't for the life figure out how you could properly measure someone's actual level of skill.

A friend of mine said he can't believe that a game as big as the COD franchise doesn't have that feature. As far as I know, they don't. Seems to me I get put into lobbys based more on connection than anything else. But maybe I'm wrong. Anybody care to confirm one way or another? And if they do have some kind of skill matching system, how in the hell does it work?

There is no skill matching system, which is the main reason I haven't bought Black Ops yet.

A simple solution would be to have a rating system which tracks your win/loss ratio, the higher your ratio, the higher your rating. Unfortunately that type of thing doesn't seem much in use anymore, even Halo Reach gave up on that type of thing due to complaints about boosters, cheaters and smurfing.

A question for those of you who have played some Blacks Ops multiplayer. I have been reading on some other boards that multiplayer suffers from poor framerates, poor connection speeds and poor hitscan detection compared to the relative smoothness of MW2. Is that true? And does the platform you're playing on make a difference?

I want to get Black Ops, but if it really is worse than MW2 I'm going to have to pass.

Thanks, I was pretty sure they didn't, but I wasn't 100% sure.

I have Black Ops for the 360 and I don't know that I'm seeing those issues. I haven't played a lot of matches yet, but so far I've only had one match with connection issues. In fact, I kind of noticed that it seemed like there was less lag than in prior version. I've had almost no "Oh Bullshit!" deaths (where you yell "oh Bullshit at the TV when dying because it looks fishy) except maybe for a couple of random grenade deaths. I thought they said they had fixed the issue of people throwing grenades half way across the map.

As for framerates and hit detection, maybe I'm not a good person to ask because I'm maybe a little less discerning than some, but I really haven't noticed any issues.

I'm playing on the 360, and so far I haven't had any problems with framerates, connection speeds, or hit detection. Well, aside from a few instances where I'm damn sure I swung my knife first, yet I ended up getting killed first. But that's not something that happens a lot, and certainly isn't a game breaker.

From everything I'm reading, it seems the 360 is the most stable version of the game.

The knifing is still complete nonsense. The hit detection does feel really wonky... MW2 is definitely better in that respect. Get weird frame drops when shooting, i think it has something to do with playing sound. Hard to be sure. Pretty annoying. I've had a few games where it would go like in slow motion, kind of like some of the MW2 hacked lobbies... but we're talking on an official west coast treyarch server. With a 30ms ping.

They have some issues to work out.

I guess I'll show my ignorance here, perhaps hit detection doesn't mean what I think it does. So I'll just say I'm stupid, can someone explain it to me?

Thanks.

Hit detection is when the game recognizes geometry colliding - a bullet hitting a player, for example. When you feel like you've shot someone and the game doesn't kill them, that's when you get bad hit detection.

The basic problem I'm having vs MW2.... in MW2 if I put a shot on someone, I would get a hitmarker. Now sometimes there's lag and I'd die before my shots registered... but that's about it. In Black Ops I'll be aiming down the sight, perfect aim center mass, fire a bunch of rounds and.... nothing... no hit marker.. no lag where I had really died... just shots that miss for no reason
