Bye-Bye Ponds?

Though I don't have a problem with Adric, not really, I do like the relationship he has with the fourth Doctor when it's just the two of them in The Keeper of Traken and Logopolis/

I like Adric. I like Mel. I like Pond

The issue for me is that Amy Pond's character arc is well done as soon as they resolve the whole baby/River/Impossible Astronaut thread. Killing Rory will only make Amy look like a bitch if she continues to travel with the Doctor or psychotic if she out for revenge (which the Doctor would never encourage).

As soon as you showed Amy being happy at home with Rory, you basically ended any potential she had as a companion.

Ditto. Everyone's certainly entitled to their own wrong opinion, and this dude is definitely entitled ...

I saw this on the DW news feed from Facebook. Sad to see them go but I do think the writers have done as much with the Ponds as they can at this stage; all they seemed to do in the last season was gallivant around after their baby.

I'd be happy to see how this Doctor fares with another companion or companions. And lets' face it, you can't bear a heartbreaking exit!

(PS - well done on reviving such an old but perfectly on-topic thread!)

Wonder if they'll make it as far as the 50th anniversary programme. If the Beeb does a multi-Doctor story, it would make sense to include the Ponds as they now know a lot about regeneration and other aspects of the Doctor's mythology.

This sort of reminds me of the old episodes of WHO where the new companion would be introduced just before the current doctor dies.

Tom Baker's final episodes- Teggan and Nyssa

Peter Davison's final episodes- Peri

Colin Baker's final episodes- Mel

While Amy and Rory may be leaving, I really hope that The Last Centurion finds a way to pop up from time to time.

I'd love to see an episode where Rory, Jack, and the Doctor team up.

Considering the average "life span" of a companion has usually been a season (if you factor in the original series as well), and we often saw companions come and go within a season, too, it's been a gift to have Amy and Rory around for as long as they have.

The "heartbreakingly" certainly assumes some sort of death scenario. But it could also mean other things. Remember there's still the whole issue of the fact the Doctor was not only present at but indirectly responsible for the death of River Song in Forest of the Dead - a fact the Ponds are unaware of as yet.

I don't know if killing them off is a good idea. While dramatically it might be cool to see, viewers - casual and die-hard - seem to be so touchy these days, that killing off popular characters like Amy could turn the audience against the show. And remember also in the UK the powers that be still consider it a children's show, which is one reason why we haven't seen too many cases of "dead forevers" over the years with regards to ongoing characters (even River didn't 100% die as we know).

Regardless, I hope the Ponds pass the torch to "the new friend" with a bang. I noticed Moffat used the singular, so I imagine we'll be going back to the 1:1 dynamic. Time to start the pool and dust off all those "Is Lily Allen the next companion?" e-mails! ;)

No I heard the next companion would be Kate Winslet

;)
Hey! Sophia Myles was asking Moffat for a lunch meeting on Twitter; maybe it's going to be Reinette and the eleventh Doctor. :)

The new companion hasn't been cast (and it's rumored that they're looking at actresses in LA after the New Year), but there's supposed to be some sort of announcement tomorrow.

Of course the problem with doing a "heartbreaking" ending for them is that after crying wolf so many times with them no one will believe it.

Still, time to break out the Champagne regardless.

Funny, I thought the season finale, with the Doctor kicking them out of the TARDIS and setting them up with a house was supposed to get rid of them. :p
