Burning Dreams

Picked up the novel Friday, but it'll have to wait until I finish To Reign in Hell, which I'm enjoying immensely, btw. :)

If your cable company doesn't carry G4, I suggest you start harassing them. It's the video game/computer tech channel (merged with Tech TV a few years ago, but the computer tech shows are all but gone now). They've started running a lot of Trek lately... I guess in an effort to become the geek channel. The uncut TOS eps are nice, as long as they don't continually show the same eps like Spike TV does. Trek 2.0 , however, is awful.

G4 is crap. They merged with Tech TV and ruined it. I liked it best when they were seperate channels. Then I could get the best of both instead of the worst of both. If you don't have G4, count yourself lucky.

The only reason I have any interest in G4 is TOS. Why's Trek 2.0 so bad?

Trek 2.0 is a little window in the middle of the screen with all sorts of crap around it. Very annoying.

*pictures an unholy melding of Star Trek and Pop-Up Video*

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Actually, a pop-up video thing would be more watchable. The chat at the bottom is beyond lame, I don't get their little "Spock Market" game on the right, and no one really cares about the stats on the left, which I assume count from the beginning of this fiasco till the current episode. Who cares how many times Kirk has his shirt ripped.

The trivia ticker at the top of the screen has interesting facts from time to time. On the whole, I'd enjoy the thing better if it was just that ticker at the bottom of the screen and the episode. I like learning trivia, and if I've seen the episode 17 times already I can actually look at the ticker without missing anything.

I have to agree with this. I find this Trek 2.0 annoying. It takes away from the enjoyment of the episode. While it's a good idea, I don't think it was well thought out.

Do they show it normal or only with all that crap?

Yes, they show uncut versions of the episodes with no extra crap. Those showings take 70 minutes with all the commercials they run, so they start at odd times. Sci-fi stopped showing uncut versions years ago.

I just picked up Burning Dreams last night and I'm now a little more than halfway done and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. When Burning Dreams was first announced I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first because a few years back I got really excited when Garth of Izar was announced but was very disappointed by that one when I actually read it because I thought it be sort of like a biography of the character. Of course that wasn't what it was at all. Fortunately Burning Dreams is exactly what I thought it would be, the story of Christopher Pike's childhood and early career in Starfleet.

Wow, I'm so tempted to actually break away from my catch up list and get BD. I'd decided a while back that after Summon the Thunder, that I was gonna spend the rest of this year catching up on all of the recent Trek books I haven't read yet, but now I might actually be getting a new book. DAMN YOU!!!

I had the same thought in regards to the Garth book. I enjoyed Burning Dreams. I only hope Pike was able to watch historical recordings of Crimson Tide. He might have found it somewhat...familiar.

Glad I wasn't the only one mentally casting Gene Hackman as Captain Kamnach.

And was the character of "Wesley" meant to be future Commodore Bob Wesley?

^ The answer to your spoiler question is yes.

As for Kamnach, I was mentally casting Donnelly Rhodes (DaVinci's Inquest, Soap, Battlestar Galactica) in the role.

I just finished the book (blew threw it in a little more than 24 hours) and enjoyed it very much. I'd been eagerly awaiting it for months, and it didn't disappoint. I'll post my further thoughts in the spoiler thread.

Thanks to Margaret, Marco, KRAD and all the others involved for giving me a nice respite in an otherwise crummy week.

I don't think I had a clear mental image of Kamnach before I realised the similarities to "Crimson Tide", but then it all fell into place - including the name.
