Bugs!

^^^They should have remembered the Aerogard.

We were swarmed by flies while visiting Wave Rock in Western Australia. The flies were huge.

But even worse we also ran into a locust swarm in driving in WA. We had to pull into a service station because our car was covered with dead insects (and the splattered insides). At the garage they had a pile of locusts about 20 feet high and they were still sweeping more into the pile. All these locusts had come off cars that had stopped. Out locusts were added to the pile.

This was in the days before digital cameras so I don't have a photo of it.

Where l live we dont get many locusts useully it is in the country areas but sometimes they can make there way in to the local towns.

The cane toad is a creature which is increasing and coming into diffent states in Australia.

Plus l know around two years ago we had a terrible ant plague

Because it was isolated from the rest of the world for God knows how many millions of years, Australia is particularly vulnerable to widespread ecological disruption each time a non-native species has been introduced. There've been plagues of mice, rabbits, and now those pesky cane toads. Ironically, the toads were deliberately introduced as a measure to control cane beetles and other sugar-cane pests. The toads eat the beetles, all right -- and just about anything else. And because they're poisonous to most would-be predators, they're pretty safe from getting eaten themselves.

I've heard that licking a cane toad will give you a buzz from the venom secreted by its skin. Two questions: 1) Is it true? 2) How the hell did someone discover this?

It is worthy to note that though Mainland Australia has had many extinctions Tasmania has had few. Only one mammal (the thylacine) and two sub-species of birds (the Tasmanian Emu and the King Island Emu) have become extinct in Tasmania since white settlement in 1803.

Technically Tasmania should have, as an island should have had more extinction than the much larger Mainland. Many feral animals have been introduced into Tasmania - rabbits, sparrows, starlings, cats - but these animals haven't caused species to become extinct in Tasmania.

The two animals that have never made it to Tasmania are the dingo and the fox. The dingo was probably the reason Tasmanian devils and the Thylacine became extinct on the Mainland (before white arrival) and the fox and habitat destruction are the main reason for later extinctions.

There are several species of animals that are extinct or highly endangered on the Mainland that are still common in Tasmania.

. . . Well they say the Huntsman spider loves the australian fly.:)
Is that anything like Spanish fly?
There aren't many people here that are going to get the reference, but I did.
Hasn't EVERYBODY heard of Spanish fly?

There are rumors that the thylacine (also called the Tasmanian tiger or marsupial wolf) isn't really extinct, though the last specimen in captivity died in the 1930s. Occasional “sightings” of the critters in the wild have been reported. Of course, there are lots of folks who claim to have seen Elvis Presley alive.

So, what about those toads? Should I try licking one to see what happens?

I think that for thylacines to exist there would have to be a sustainable population, and if there was such a population I think we would have had solid proof of their existence.

My Dad actually recalled seeing the last thylacine in Beaumaris zoo when he was a young boy.

If the thylacine still exist I don't think it will be found in Tasmania, or even Australia but rather in an remote area of New Guinea. Many "new" species of mammals have been found in New Guinea in the last 20 years including the dingiso.

Can anyone suggest a reason why I can't post a link or a photo the normal way here. I used to be able to up to a couple of days ago and I still can on my other computer.

Hasn't EVERYBODY heard of Spanish fly?
I know what it is but I can assure you I have never used it, or should I say my partners have never used it.

Quite true. Just like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.

In that case, logic suggests that the problem is with your computer. Have you tried rebooting, or switching your modem off and on? That's the first thing I always try.

You haven't missed anything.

So . . . WHAT ABOUT THOSE TOADS??

It seems to be a problem with my Firefox, I am not having any trouble when using IE.

No, you haven't missed anything. They swarm here on the high deserts near the US/Mexican border every year - so this should be the "hornyness" capital of North America. However, nobody here gets very "excited" about them. They are actually not a fly at all, but a species of blister beetle. One single leg joint can kill a horse or cow if it gets in their hay. And alfalfa hay in blossom is exactly what attracts them, so there are always stock fatalities. There is a persistent belief that they will cause amorous behavior, but that could not be further from the truth. They have, instead, caused more than a few documented murders, perpetrated by the victims of their use.

This may be a little late, for RoJoHen's bug invasion, but if you light a candle, or an open flame in a darkened room many bugs will fly straight into it. This was used as an early form of bug-zapper, long before electricity.

So - was that why Spock really had that fire pot in his quarters? It had nothing to do with some exotic form of meditation... it was all those pesky, venomous, alien BUGS that sneaked on board and infested the Enterprise! ;)

I hate bugs.

Yes l know you hate bugs Mr Sloan smiles

I also hate wasps

i was sitting at that bus stop waiting for the bus to arrive when l heard a buzz.

And never let anyone tell you that a wasp can not look mean! I have seen one come after a person after it was repelled several times, and change her strategy each time in the attempt:eek:. They are one of Earths most intelligent insects, clever little warriors:cool:. True, she is usually only doing this to protect her children somewhere near by, but I always wish that she could put up some better "No Trespassing" signs. Sometimes that faint buzzing, and natures warning colors (black, yellow, red, or stripes) are less than adequate for the job!
