Where did Jeremy Renner’s personality go through the years and how can we get it back. First of all, it’s so fun going back to old shows or movies and seeing how young actors/actresses were compared to now. I mean this is Hawkeye we’re talking about and in this episode he probably was a C-list guest star. Second, I think Renner showed more personality here than Avengers and Bourne combined. I didn’t know he had it in him, honestly.
This was another enjoyable episode of Angel. It’s your first season crime of the week but we got more about Angel’s backstory and Kate knows Angels secret now. Also Cordelia has the best lines. Her line when Angel was asking for the steak and Cordelia goes “its 8 AM” was hilarious. I like her intuition but there are times when she says too much. It’s funny though.

Angel busting through the roof of the building and Batman-ing down to the floor below is iconic as hell.
Also, you hit on something that goes under appreciated when it comes to the Buffyverse. So many superhero TV shows get bogged down in long, drawn out and freaking unnecessary "hiding their secret identity from loved ones" BS.
Buffy's friends found out immediately in the pilot. Cordy found out 12 episodes in. Riley found out 9 episodes after being introduced. Oz and Tara both found out pretty damn quickly after they were introduced. And now Kate found out the truth about Angel 11 episodes in. Joyce admittedly took a bit longer with 33 episodes, but still. These are two superhero series that are blissfully free of any secret identity drama 90% of the time. Thank God for that.

Maintaining her cluelessness through the end of Season 2 had the unfortunate side effect of making her look like a really inattentive parent.
I wish the time Joyce tried to be an activist and take back control of the town for the adults wasn’t a symptom of demonic manipulation. Pre-trying to murder their children she was making some good points.
I’m surprised it took Joyce so long to find out. I thought the best time to tell her was in the “School Hard” episode where Buffy pretty much saves the school.

This one was just ok but not my favorite. I’m kinda getting tired of the whole Cordelia in trouble thing I’ve seen a few times already. Also the demon looked kinda bad. Still I loved the final scene with Cordelia saying there’s two people she would trust with her life. Wesley’s response was perfect.

I think the best part of this one was the ending credits. Watching Angel and Wesley dance was hysterical. As for the rest of the episode, I think it needed more urgency for the subject matter of male oppressors in another demension. Heck this could have been an arc. As it was, it was kind of slow going even though the fight at the resort was fun.
Was the actress who played Jeira (spelling?) a big name? I saw her and my first thought was a young Michelle Yeoh. She even talked like Michelle too.

From what I vaguely recall there were bigger plans for her and this plot line but for whatever reason it needed to be condensed to one episode

Did you look at your season four case to see if that’s where season 7 was?
As Guy mentioned, Sean Gunn is in this one as Jhiera's friend Mars. He also played Lucas, the demon that tried to get Doyle to help them in the flashbacks in Hero. Whedon was close friends with his brother James Gunn even back in 1999. A certain character you'll meet later is actually named after him, believe it or not. I'm not sure if this means Whedon got Gunn that Guardians of the Galaxy gig.
He did get his brother and sister-in-law Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dr. Horrible; best episodes of Dollhouse) and Angel: Seasons 4-5 showrunner Jeffrey Bell the gig showrunning Agents of SHIELD. And Buffy/Angel writers Drew Goddard (first two episodes before departing to make Sony's non-existent Sinister Six movie), Steven S. DeKnight (remainder of Season 1) and Douglas Petrie (Season 2 alongside Marco Ramirez) their gigs showrunning Daredevil. And Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas (creator/showrunners of Reaper and writers for Dollhouse) their gig showrunning Agent Carter. Whedon's had a huge impact on the MCU beyond his Avengers movies and uncredited re-write on The First Avenger.
Also in this episode: Ken Marino of The State/Wet Hot American Summer/Party Down/Veronica Mars/Reaper/Children's Hospital fame as the dude that gets Cordy pregnant.

My favorite scene is when Phantom Dennis gets Angel a beer. Just two dead guys hanging out.
It definitely feels like that. Or a backdoor pilot. Turns out that neither is the case, however. In a sprawling four-part episode-by-episode interview/Season 1 retrospective that Tim Minear did back in August 2000 (which I will be linking to via The Way Back Machine once this season ends due to how in-depth and spoilery it is), Jhiera was simply part of a short-lived late Season 1 effort to find actresses that had good chemistry with Boreanaz to potentially recur as a love interest.
It's jarring as hell, though. This is straight up the only major thing I can think of on this show that is never payed off anywhere down the line. Something that both David Greenwalt and his writing staff and Jeffrey Bell and his completely different (!) writing staff excelled at.

It's from this five year old interview Cinema Blend did with Whedon. Looking it up right now for the quote reveals that, yes, Whedon did get Gunn his Guardians gig. And also used his (then) power at Marvel Studios to give him complete creative control.
