Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

This is how I would do a re-watch as well, but a first time viewer would have to be wary as to which seasons to watch first. Definitely Buffy season 5 before Angel season 2 and then Angel season 5 before Buffy season 7.
What? No! Buffy S7 before Angel S5.
Preferably the final arc of Angel S4 before the End of Buffy S7, though.

I said this when I started season 4, and I think it answers to your point. So far the best example of this is Buffy (The Series) is almost treating Cordelia like she didn't exist in the first 3 seasons. Granted I think she was mentioned once so far, but here is this character who was part of the gang from Season 2 onwards, actually contributed, and it feels like the series has already forgotten about her. That's why I saw the Angel premiere after I saw the Season 4 premiere. It felt really weird that Angel seemed to have a better transition from the events of Season 3 than Buffy did, even though on Buffy it was all about starting College. When I saw the second episode of the respective seasons, I actually started to question why I was doing the whole switching thing because neither episode was related to another. Then when I saw the third episode of Angel and they pretty much recapped what happened on the Buffy episode, I'm like, do I really need to do this whole switching thing. It feels like the shows do a good job getting people up to speed. Basically, the only thing I wish was different regarding both shows to open up this current season was handle Cordelia's transition better.
Frankly, they would have handled it the exact same way had Carpenter just left. In fact, they probably wouldn't have mentioned Cordelia at all. Call it the Mandy Hampton syndrome. It was pretty standard practice at the time.

And I probably would have still been a little perturbed by it. I’m not asking for an entire episode. One line is good enough.

But then I would have been perturbed but moved on. In the long run it’s not really a big deal.

Who took over the comic book license for Buffy? And did they take Angel too or is this like how it used to be when Dark Horse did Buffy Season 8 while IDW did Angel: After the Fall?

Speaking of Cardigans, Buffy might have been the only 90s high school show Favorite Game wasn't used.

True. But we won't hold that against Buffy. :D

Yeah. Granted, there are still huge bits of Seasons 6 and 7 that I haven't seen but I only recall Cordelia getting mentioned twice after she left the show, once in "Pangs" and once in "No Place Like Home."

Still, she fared better than Jesse. It seemed like he was very good friends with Xander and Willow before Buffy came to town but no one EVER spoke of him again after he died.

But in fairness that's 2 episodes a week, rather than 2 episodes a night.

It was originally 2 episodes a night when the WB would air Buffy and Angel back to back on Tuesday nights during the 4th and 5th seasons of Buffy and the first 2 seasons of Angel. They only split up once Buffy moved to UPN in Season 6 while Angel stayed on the WB. Ah, the pre-binging era.

I would call that one episode per series a week. I know they aired Buffy and Angel back to back, which was why it was easier to follow both shows as you got one each a week. The Pre-Binging era was a lot peaceful back then. ;)

The Initiative

Looks like the main season storyline is going to kick into high gear with this episode, but if there is anything I learned, it's usually episode 7 where the Season shifts so it worked here too. I have to say, is there anyone at UC Sunnydale who doesn't have an alternate identity? The roommate was a demon, and now the teacher and TA are agents working on a secret vampire project which includes taking away the ability to harm living beings. I have to say that was a pretty good introduction to this group and I'm interested to learn more. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of Buffy's new boyfriend being a government agent, considering the whole Parker thing, but I'm giving the show the benefit of the doubt right now. Willow was great here as usual too.

Is this the first time they've given Oz's real name on screen? I don't remember them doing that before, but at least now it's official.

Also, Welcome James Marsters to the main title sequence.

Private Peculiar: Real American Hero.

And Leonard Roberts is a solid actor and I'm sure he's a good dude and all, but I don't think I've ever seen him play a character I didn't find completely unlikeable from the start.

*Actually, I've seen it suggested that Riley/Forest/Grahm were supposed to be like a counterpart to Buff/Xand/Will with Forest taking Xander's place - which is why he comes off as such a creep.

I had to check what character he played. Yeah I didn't really appreciate the toxic masculinity coming from that guy. I'm not triggered by it or anything, but it was cringeworthy.

Well not to spoil too much, but Forest's "machismo" gets much worse.

Well, at least it's Reily the one who is the one attracted to Buffy then. If it was the other two, that would be very bothersome, again especially considering I just watched Beer Bad.

Every time he did that, I would point at the screen and announce to my wife that Forrest wants Riley. Either Forrest is angry that he is losing his best friend to some girl, or Forrest is angry that he is losing the man he loves to some girl.

Either way, he's angry about losing a man.

Pangs

This episode was kinda crazy. First we get the "Happy Thanksgiving, lets tell you why it's a crappy holiday" stuff and then it ends with the indigenous guys in an epic battle at the house. It was a decent episode, but the highlight of it was probably Spike. Leave it to him to break up the argument, and just the entire time his presence added a lot of levity to the story. Taking like 5 arrows was great.

As for the whole Angel thing, When I get to Angel and read the synopsis of that episode (And it mentioned Buffy), I will rewatch the corresponding Buffy episode to remind myself of the story. This episode ended and I felt like I didn't really need to switch over to Angel right away. Xander letting it slip that Angel was there is analogous to any ending of Star Trek: The Original Series where a joke was made. Actually I think it adds a little impact to the joke if you don't see that Angel episode right away. Let it sink in and move on.

Angel season 4. Angel season 5 before Buffy season 7 would cause massive spoilers.

And honestly, I don't think it really matters that much which you watch first between 4/7. Worst case scenario, you're surprised by
Faith returning - which works fine even as a surprise, as long as you've at least seen previous seasons of Angel -
and you have no context for the scrubbing bubbles.

No, I'm 90% sure it's been mentioned before. It's just a rare thing to hear.

Did the writers take crazy pills for Season 4? It feels like we have episodes that seem to be one-upping previous episodes in the crazy department. Buffy in love with Spike? Giles Blind? And all this because Willow wanted the pain to go away from losing Oz. Heck, we even got Amy again and it was a blank and you miss it kind of thing. Actually, I'm glad the Rat is still there. It's one of those subtle easter eggs (or in-jokes) that are part of the series charm. I really do hope they cure her one day. Anyway, this episode was pretty good. Weird, but good.
