Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

Star Trek Vulcan reference in the Homecoming episode. Funny thing is that wasn't the Vulcan death grip. :guffaw:

If that’s the case I should be fine then. The only time TNG and DS9 really crossover on a storyline was to set up the Maquis. They were still separate shows sharing the same universe.

And sometimes characters pop up on DS9 that require some quick dialogue to set up who they are and what's been going on in their lives.

Homecoming was a ton of fun. Nice to have an episode with some levity after a lot of seriousness so far this season. Loved the interplay with Cordy and Buffy, and Cordy standing up to Gorch was just fun. Also, we finally meet the Mayor, and I'm making a prediction not having seen this series before. He's a Vampire.

If I'm wrong, I'll find out at the end of the season. ;)

I dunno if he's a vampire.

But his name is Richard Wilkins, which is sort of a Decker/Riker thingy of Richard Nixon. Also Mr. Trick.

Tricky Dick.

This may or may not foreshadow a giant penis metaphor in his future.

Reminds me, back in the day WWE had a vampire character who didn't have the best physique that someone referred to as "Vampire, the Buffet Slayer" which I never failed to find amusing.

Gangrel. And the brood.

Vampires were to the nineties what zombies are to...pretty much ever since. They were everywhere.
Which is another reason why things were just better back then.

As for the Vulcan reference. I will just say we get a even cooler one in Season 7. I hope that wasn't to much of a spoiler? Is talking about a joke the same as letting someone hear or know the details of a joke?

Not a Vampire.

He was walking around in daylight now and then, and he joked about selling his soul.

I would expect this show to be loaded with Star Trek references actually. When Buffy was on, Star Trek was at it's peak, with DS9, Voyager, and Insurrection coming out. I think a couple of episodes ago there was even a Klingon mention, but it was pretty quick.

And you certainly do not need to be Communist to think people (Metaphorically) spending their whole life in factories with no identity then getting spit out is a bad thing.

I agree. Especially since having a screwed over work force is the kind of free market solution many predatory capitalists love!

There's more to it than that. I mean, if you really break it down to its most basic elements, what is a slayer? A girl who, for all in intents and purposes, works in service to the state and doesn't get paid for it. And really, if you think about it, "the faceless factory worker" represents the worsts sides of both absolute communism and unregulated capitalism. It's just that Joss was seizing the moment with the sight gag.

However, beyond the facepalm of it all, there is a greater symbolic meaning that fits within the main season arc. If you remove all the geopolitics and socio-economics, then Red October (Not that Red October.) was nothing more than the lower classes uniting to overthrow an oppressive government legacy. (Only to create another of their own, but I digress...)

The end of Homecoming makes it pretty evident who the big bad of the season is, so I don't think I'm spoiling anything here. And while he's literally the head of a legacy government, (That will have to wait until later because of spoilers.) there's definitely more to it than that. Listen to what he tells Trick: "The children need to be controlled..." "The rebellious element needs to be dealt with..." Essentially, the patron of the city is ushering conformity. Those two uppity girls need to be put in their place.

And I use bold here to echo what I said up thread how the whole "One girl in all the world..." is deliberately patronizing.

Or you could just believe that workers should have some kind of minimum standard of living and right to organize.

Buffy’s not working for the state. She’s working for the human race as a whole.

The Watchers Council took all the Nazi gold, probably all the Incan gold behind Cortez's back as well.

If a slayer is evil, weak or ineffective, they euthanize her, and start over with a new hapless juvenile twit.[\spoiler]

Yeah, isn't that what a superhero is. Someone who is compassionate and trying to do the right thing? I guess this goes back to my question all the way at the beginning, which was why is she a "Slayer" and how was she "Chosen". I'm starting to understand the why as I go through the series, but who picks who has the right to slay and who doesn't. There are multiple times in the series already where she hates the job, yet she understands why she has to do the job. The State didn't ask her to do it. I'm getting maybe some higher power asked her to do it, or it was destined. I wonder if that issue might be addressed, and maybe an idea of some religion will be introduced in the show. I don't know how I would feel about that, but we're in season 3 and while we are getting a lot about how being a Slayer is impacting Buffy's life, I'm not sure if they tackled the what being a slayer actually means yet.
