Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

I did too. I'm also do not agree with communism so thinking about that scene is now a little bothersome.

I prefer to think of it as her regaining her identity. It's much more positive that way.

There is a huge gap between the philosophical ideas of Communism and the way it is put into practice. Wheadon is obviously no Communist himself. The world of Star Trek is presented as a communist ideal, at least in the TNG era series.

Angel season 1 runs alongside Buffy season 4, and so on from then on.
There are a few crossover episodes, especially early on, but it won't cause you any issues to just watch the Buffy side of those. Personally, I would watch them separately. Angel is a quite different show, and I'm not convinced the back and forth tonal shifts of flipping between them would enhance your experience.

I agree with this. There are no "To Be Continued...in Angel" the way the Bionic Woman and Six Million Dollar Man did. (Dating myself, eh?) Anything backstory wise you need to know is explained within each series. And you can easily put the pieces together when you start watching Angel.

A good comparison would be TNG and DS9 when those episodes were airing at the same time.

I got to say I disagree that Buffy and Angel should be watched seperately. At least with Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1. After those two seasons I feel it's less important and of course not important at all if you ever want to watch the shows again. There is some stuff with Faith and Angel and another character I don't think I should say because of spoilers that it really helps to know what is going on in the other episode.

You are correct in that it adds layers of meaning and depth to the overall story arcs, but it is not necessary to the enjoyment of the show--especially on the first watch. Where I lived in Central America at the time, Angel wasn't even available to watch until after Buffy's fourth season had aired.

It’s not like you need to follow individual plot points to follow each show.
If you watch the correct order it explains certain macguffins showing up better and the when and how certain characters appear, including their motivations and behaviors making more sense.

If that’s the case I should be fine then. The only time TNG and DS9 really crossover on a storyline was to set up the Maquis. They were still separate shows sharing the same universe.

Faith, Hope & Trick

Did Buffy just do a First Season Flash teaser at the end of the episode? I believe they did and now I'm very much intrigued. Angel got spit out of where ever he came from Terminator Style and I have to say this is the first episode of Season 3 where I kind of perked up. That was some teaser for what is to come.

As for the rest of the episode, I like Faith. She has spark, which is a lot better than Kendra. However, I really do hope this series dives deeper into the whole Watcher thing. I mean they have retreats, and there is a watcher council, and I feel like I'm missing out. Yes this is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Buffy is the main character, but I'm also interested in the whole idea of the Watcher and feel like it's getting to be that time where we can give that part of the Slaying business a little more development.

In terms of Buffy the teenage life, god I hope the stuff with Scott sticks around for a while. Yeah it's been established that Buffy can't really have a normal life, but I hope he's around for a few episodes at least.
I'm a huge fan of Faith, she has a great arc through her showing up here and into the post-TV comics.
As for the crossovers, to keep it vague, how must of them play out is that something happens in LA or Sunnydale and after they deal with whatever the issue is they decide they need to go to see the other show's characters, and once they're there they get involved in whatever is going on there, and then go back home. Seeing the other half of the crossover will add a bit more context to why character A got involved in show B's story, but the stories are still pretty independent.
So they're pretty much the opposite of the last couple Arrowverse crossovers, which were practically one big four hour movie spread over the week.

Was this Eliza Dushku's first TV role? I think she ended up being the lead on Dollhouse (Another Whedon series I've heard good things about). Considering how she made a great first impression, I wonder if her starring role on Dollhouse was because of Buffy.

She actually had a development deal with Fox and brought Joss in to work with her on Dollhouse.

Oh so it was her idea. That's cool. I've never seen Dollhouse, but I remember hearing something about it being influencial to Season 1 of Orphan Black so maybe that's a show I might watch in the future as well.

Not sure what her creative input was, just that she brought in Whedon to work with her on a new show.

I did watch Buffy and Angel flipping back and forth a year or two ago. I had a thread here even.

My verdict. It’s nice in a few very specific cases, not worth it at all the rest of the time. I would recommend just learning the episode numbers of those cases and only trying to get those in order.

Or rather, I would only even push it in two places. First, a sequence around episode 8 or so of season 1-4, then a sequence of events in season 4-7 toward the end, specifically because one character who appears in Buffy season 7 you will look at differently if you saw what that character did previously in Angel season 4.

Some things in Buffy S7 will seem unearned if you do not have that information.

Beauty and the Beasts

You know if this episode aired now, it would fit right in in terms of issues dealing our world today. Whedon and crew handled the idea of domestic violence really well here, and they were pretty tactful with it.

As for Angel coming back, I'm still confused as the how and why. I'm figuring that will be explained soon.

Not really much to say about this episode other than they treated a sensitive subject really well, and it probably, unfortunately, applies more in 2019 than in 1998.
