Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

My wife an I had an argument about the fundamentals.

She says that the watchers created a financial/taxation opportunity that Joice had to be a ###king fool to ignore when choosing where to open her new art gallery. Most of her clients were probably Watcher shills, keeping Joice solvent, and therefore Buffy fed and clothed.

But I say that the M#### controlled the school board, and the Sunnydale School Board was the only School Board in the state (country?) That would take a girl who burnt down the gym twice. The Ma##r wanted a class protector to reduce the fatalities before graduation. Which may be why Flootie was so nice to the kids because he already knew that they were ###k# food, and it made him sympathetic.

Lie to Me was a very heartbreaking, but very real episode. There's a lot of it that really does hit close to home, especially if you have a dibilitating disease like Cancer and whether or not life is worth living. Ford was the bad guy in this episode, but the scene where Buffy talks to him about choice and mass murder really made him a sympathetic figure, someone who you know is doing the wrong thing but you can understand why he's doing it all the same.

We also got more from Angel's backstory and this was finally dealing with who Drusilla was. I got to say Buffy really is one of those shows where they don't let things go to waste. This is why I love this kind of arc based storytelling. The episodes are self contained, but there are still those larger arcs that are there just growing. I honestly wish TV would go back to this kind of storytelling because it makes the people who like episodic television happy and it makes the people who love arc based storytelling happy. The 90s were really ripe with this, from DS9 to Babylon 5 to Farscape and I will include Buffy in it now too.

Willow continues to shine. I loved the scene where they are talking about "I Touch Myself" (A classic 90s Song) and then her quote about realizing what the song was about. Never change, Willow, Never change.

The Dark Age

I'm pleasently surprised we got another Giles episode so soon after Halloween. It was nice to see Ethan again, and now I understand @CorporalClegg's comment about the actor passing away but being one of the more interesting recurring guest stars on the show. I'm really glad this season has been really developing our cast quite a bit and we're only 8 episodes in. Heck, even Cordelia who I thought was a Jerk in season 1 has become a really good character, and my fears about her always being the target to be saved seems to be unfounded. I love watching her, Xander, and Willow working together without Giles tutelage. This episode wasn't as good as the previous two, but it continued Gile's arc and Willow once again is the smartest one in the room who needs to bring things back on track.

Just a heads up, Surprise and Innocence are a two-parter. So you've got two upcoming two-parters in six episodes. Just letting you know in case you want to set your viewing schedule accordingly.

I know the next one was a two parter. I think Hulu has a (1) and a (2) next to the episode names which is helpful.

I've always loved that last scene between Buffy and Giles from Lie to Me. Such a sweet, touching moment between those two.

I loved that scene too. They have gotten closer this season and I appreciate that. It actually enhances what happens in the next episode showing that yes, they do support one another.

I'm watching the What's My Line 2 parter, and just to make a few comments on part one before I forget anything:

-That was a good episode, but I'm a little confused about a scene where Willow is pulled aside by what looked like FBI Agents to be a computer programmer and we get an awkward scene between her and Oz. I know it was part of the Career day storyline, but it was one scene and then they never brought it up again. It was almost like they forgot to cut the scene out. Of course I'm watching part 2 now so it might come up, but it was weird

-Drusilla is a deliciously cool character. She and Spike have marvalous chemistry together.

-Does Gellar skate in real life. Yeah it's acting, but I really loved the scene where she was skating around the ice with the score in the background.

-We meet Kendra in this episode. That's setting up some good stuff in Part 2, and maybe answering some questions that I almost forgot about, like the whole Buffy death, come back to life thing.

Part 2 of the What's My Line story was pretty good. They pretty much explained my questions from part 1, and Oz and Willow are kind of adorable together. I hope that becomes a thing as the season goes on. I'm not sure I liked Kendra or not. I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of her, but Buffy's comment about being stuck in the 80s was quite apt. Still, it seemed like the actress might have over done it a tad, but maybe the more I see her the more I will get used to her. I really liked how they wrapped up the Drusilla storyline, with basically the ritual worked and now Spike and Drusilla has switched places in a matter of speaking. I'm really looking forward to this Drusilla, at her full capacity. Like I said in part 1, She and Spike are fun together.

I love the pace this show is going at and realize how much I miss the 22 episode seasons. Everyone wants short seasons, but then you don't have time for these character moments. Watching Buffy and Kendra interact and seeing how they are different in the Slayer job is something I don't think you would get in a short season. Also, this series keeps building on it's mythos while having unique episodes that are enjoyable on their own. I'm really liking how this season is doing more world building, but also quite a lot of character building too. It's what makes a perfect season 2, kinda like DS9's season 2 and how after getting all the kinks out, the series was finding it's own unique identity.

Kendra is an interesting character with real potential, but... not the greatest actress in the world. And almost certainly the worst accent on tv.

That's pretty much what I had an issue with. It was like she was speaking in slow motion a good chunk of the time. I do like the potential of multiple slayers though, so we'll see how this plays out.

Season 2 has a couple of weak episodes up front which you've already got through, but it's really strong from Halloween on out, in my opinion (one or two exceptions you'll get to ;) ). It's remarkable looking back how much crucial Buffyverse stuff comes from those fifteen or so episodes that close out the season.

I think it was more because, with the people involved in season seven, it became pretty obvious that he probably shouldn't be making some of his classic comments. Yet he still manages to say several distasteful things through the course of the season.

Until I saw your comment I completely forgot about his
extended dream sequence sexualizing several most likely underage potentials. What the fucking fuck, writers!?

I am shamed to say but I haven't seen dolhouse, please don't hate me ;)
Is it as good as say Angel or Firefly?

Definitely not, but from "Epitaph One" (the unaired 13th episode of Season 1) through the end of its second and final season it was an ambitious sci-fi saga as they crammed several seasons worth of story plans into fourteen episodes. Some great acting too from Fran Kranz, Enver Gjokaj (Why isn't he more gainfully employed!? Get on that shit Hollywood!) and Olivia Williams.

It's by far the least of the Mutant Enemy series (with Agents of SHIELD almost getting the title were it not for its terrific fourth and fifth seasons), but it's still a solid genre series. It's their Day of the Dead/Return of the Jedi/Temple of Doom, if you will.

Kendra is an interesting character with real potential, but... not the greatest actress in the world. And almost certainly the worst accent on tv.

Allegedly, they brought in a dialect coach to teach her that accent, which is from a very specific area of Jamaica. Unfortunately, if true, they went with the most fake ass sounding real Jamaican accent humanly possible.

Speaking of, I just read an article today suggesting Jessica Parker Kennedy wants to play Buffy in the reboot. That's like the best idea ever.
Can't say I'm familiar with her; a quick Google suggests I've not seen her in anything. Buffy is a difficult part to play well, I think. There's a lot of layers to her character.

A couple clunkers coming up, but then you'll be at on of my favorites: Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.
That episode is definitely peak toxic Xander for this season. Magic rohypnol, played as a joke.
