Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

Xander’s pretty average for “Fun dumb guy” characters from the 90s. You didn’t see it the same way then because teenage male behavior was expected to be lewd and sex obsessed.

There’s only one episode where he tries to go around consent and in that he was only planning to dump her. And you can’t hold a guy’s fantasy against him, only his actions.
Beware the spoilers

I'm almost tempted to start a rewatch just to see what I make of Xander now, because I was never bothered by him when I watched it before. I just thought he acted like all teenage guys on these kinds of shows acted.

I don't remember what I acted like when I was a teenager, but I don't think I would ever use the phrase "White Trash" or make fun of someone who might not know English very well. That was basically my issue with him in that episode last night. He seemed way out of line even for an "immature" teenager.

I am shamed to say but I haven't seen dolhouse, please don't hate me ;)
Is it as good as say Angel or Firefly?

The first four-ish episodes are heavily interfered with by FOX who wanted a sexy prostitute gets in trouble of the week repeating storyline.

Once FOX ***ks off we get spy stories, taking over the world conspiracies, guilt, and a bizarre apocalypse looming on the horizon.

After two episodes that were either not good (Inca Mummy Girl) or average (Reptile Boy) Halloween is an excellent return to form, and Spike is back so the episode was already going to be better than the last two.

It’s almost like this episode addressed some concerns I’ve had lately, namely I asked for a Willow episode and I got a Willow episode. We finally got to see Hannigan with some meaty material, and if this episode sets up a new, more Outgoing Willow, that’s how you do character development. We see her take charge, and at the end when she dumps the ghost sheet and walks with a new confidence, it’s entirely earned.

I wonder if this episode won any awards for costuming. I expect not since WB shows don’t get nominated for Emmys, but Buffy’s 1775 costume was beautiful. It looked like a show that got a bigger budget in season 2, and if I said a prior episode looked Dated, I think this episode could work in any time. I did love Willows comment about Why couldn’t Buffy be Xena.

Anyway, Spike returns and this was just a spectacular Halloween story. Hell, Xander didn’t annoy me this time and that was a plus. When Buffy snaps out of the spell and says “Hi Honey, I’m home”, it’s such another awesome badass moment. Yeah, Geller really improved as an actress from prophey girl onward and it’s such a joy to watch her kick ass like that.

I think the most exciting thing about this episode was it might have started some new arcs going forward. You have Willow no longer hiding but we also learn quite a bit about Giles and how he’s not your ordinary librarian. I hope the show delves deeper into this direction, maybe even clarifying what the “watcher” is because Giles is a lot older than he looks. I’m intrigued.

I think I liked Spike’s intro episode slightly better than this one but man I had a ton of fun with Halloween. It’s funny. Before I started Buffy I was watching Brooklyn Nine Nine and absolutely loved the Halloween Heist episodes. Halloween continues that streak of great episodes featuring the holiday even when I have felt a lot of shows that do holiday episodes turn out to be corny.

Great return to form, BTVS.

If you enjoyed all the other Joss shows, you should enjoy Dollhouse as well. And they did a good job of giving us a complete two season show. And hey it's more Eliza Dushku!

From episode 5 of season 2 through the end is some of the finest televised science fiction writing in the last decade. This show would have done much better as a streaming show.

The great thing about Dollhouse is that it's honest-to-God science fiction. Not spaceships and aliens, but "Let's postulate an amazing scientific advancement, and see how it affects people and society" science fiction. It starts out fooling you into thinking it's going to be all titillation and sexual fantasies, and then goes way WAY deeper and more unexpected.

When Orphan Black first came out one of the comments I kept reading was how much influence it took from Dollhouse. I've never seen it, but considering I'm now watching the Whedon-verse (And I did see Firefly when it aired), it might be something I pick up eventually.

Later episodes get very deep into Giles backstory, and it ends up IMO being one of the best of all of the characters.

Btw I'm loving this thread reliving what it's like to watch for the first time. I got on board during the spring-summer of 2001 before the Season 6 premiere. I was watching Season 2 syndicated reruns late night on my ABC affiliate. And then I started recording all FX weekly reruns, I burned through a lot of VHS...one of the last VHS binges before the DVR advent from our local cable company the following year.

Hm. I never thought there was a similarity. But it's been a long time since I saw Dollhouse.

I got on the Buffy train in 2003. My first episode was the series finale. I was super interested and spent the next few months getting the DVD’s.

I just wanted to say that I watched season one again and it’s better than I remembered. Haven’t seen it since 2007. With the exception of Teacher’s Pet, I Robot You Jane, and The Puppet Show, it’s very enjoyable.

Can people please stop with the "Just wait until X happens in episode X or season X"? This is a first-time watch thread. Have some respect.
I agree. Let the o/p make up his own mind about the show without our influence.

Halloween is definitely one of the classic episodes of the series. As someone who's read a lot of fanfic of this series, there's probably no more often used episode in fanfic than this one. The combination of Ethan (one of the most engaging side characters on the show) and that turn into your costume/be careful what you wish for premise is just too much fun for people to pass up.
