Buffy season 8-- MAJOR SPOILERS-- Twilight reveal

I think Buffy Season 8 was initially intended to be just a couple years after "Chosen" (if even that), but eventually it was decided to be a lot more recent. Of course who really knows... I have deduced this mainly from the pop culture references that Joss & Co. are so fond of, such as:

-Faith and Genevieve (the evil slayer) discussing their mutual affinity for Amy Winehouse. Winehouse wasn't very well-known internationally before 2006. However, she did have a successful album out in the U.K. in 2003, and as this issue takes place primarily in England, we can perhaps write this one off.

-Buffy telling Willow about her fantasy involving Daniel Craig. Craig wasn't really a household name before Casino Royale, which came out in late 2006. One could assume thus assume that this issue takes place thereabouts, or slightly later.

-Buffy goes on a journey with Andrew, during which he prattles on about a number of things. One thing he says is, "Sometimes, I get really mad at Heath Ledger, but then I just get sad again," or something to that effect. In any case, he's clearly referring to Ledger's death from an overdose in January 2008. So it would seem, then, that 2008 is the year that (at least part) of the season is set in.

Of course, they might just be overlooking the details when they have a pop culture reference that they want to put in there. IDW's Angel series might be guilty of this too (i.e., in the "Aftermath" arc, an angel asks, er, Angel, if he can help him with a crossword puzzle that is asking him what film won Best Picture in 2005 -- this is very soon after the "Hell moment", and therefore very soon after "Not Fade Away", which happened in 2004. Perhaps it was a mystical crossword from the future -- or something.)

So issue 34 came out today. Things are...interesting, to say the least. Short answer?

Buffy and Angel have sex. This ends the world. No, really. Fire brimstone and demons rain down from the sky, earthquakes, volcanoes, typhoons, whole oceans boiling...

Thinking about it, and what Giles says about the secret history behind the Slayer line, and some of the stuff we've even seen in the 'flash forwards' parts of the Angel IDW comics, and Fray....things are actually looking to piece together somewhat definitively.

Also, I'm calling it right now--it may never come up (I'm still somewhat skeptical, though not as much when I first made my rant in this thread), but if it does come up, we saw the Shanshu prophecy in this issue. And they shanshu'd but good.

I'm curious and apologies if this has already been brought up in this thread...are there plans to do a season nine and if so will there be a "hiatus" period after "Twilight" concludes or will it just keep on coming? I also see on Amazon there is no listing yet for the Twilight arc TPB which is disappointing.

^From what I've heard, nothing is entirely locked down yet, but there will be a season 9 and there will be a hiatus before it. Season 9 will also be considerably shorter.

I love the title.

Twilight, Chapter Three: Them F#©%ing (Plus the True History of the Universe).

*avoiding the above posts*

grrr, not gonna be able to get my hands on this till Tuesday

... and before anyone else makes the joke
Captain Harriman- "The latest Buffy issue?... won't arrive until Tuesday"

Wow that was one of the weirdest Buffy stories I've ever read...cool visuals...but weird and I'm convinced that this would not have been film able (read the issue and you'll find out why). Interesting final page and I'm really interested to see how the fuck this is concluded and where they go from here! I smell Fray a cooking...(not a spoiler just my own personal theory of where this is going now).

And I have to say that I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the bit of foreshadowing involving Spike. How does he play into all of this?

I didn't mention Spike because I was too distracted by the uh visuals I mentioned in my first post! Yeah seeing him there was interesting and I have no idea how he fits into things.

Finally got to read it today. Season 8 editor Scott Allie revealed a while back now that Spike would be appearing at some point, so it was a nice little teaser of him in this issue. Look forward to see how he comes back into it.

btw is anyone still reading the Angel IDW lines? I've said before I thought their post-After Fall series 'Aftermath' was horrendously bad. Then they had a bunch of little stories about Gunn, Drusilla and Angel & Spike at Comic-con which were mildly entertaining stuff.
Now they've got Bill Willingham writing the ongoing series. I read the first two issues and wasn't impressed. He hasn't got a handle for the characters at all, the art is all taken from stock photos, and it was badly plotted and written. And the issues that have come since sound like pretty much the same from the reviews I've read.

I'm sure watching Willingham make a complete ass of himself after the Twilight reveal was more interesting than anything he actually did in the book.

Just finished reading it and that was a pretty cool issue and a really sweet cliffhanger...can't wait for Joss's finale to start!

I don't know why they continued the series. At this point I stick only to the stuff plotted/supervised by Joss.

I actually really liked the 17 (?) parter by Lynch (plotted by Joss). I actually liked it better than Buffy S8. One writer's voice I think helped it tremendously.
