Buck Rogers - shameless cheese

What the hell does "cheesy" mean anyway? To me, it's something to put on my sandwich. Nothing more.

cheesy
"cheap, inferior," 1896, from Urdu chiz "a thing," from Persian chiz, from O.Pers. *ciš-ciy "something," from PIE pronomial stem *kwo- (see who). Picked up by British in India by 1818 and used in the sense of "a big thing" (especially in the phrase the real chiz). By 1858, cheesy had evolved a slang meaning of "showy," which led to the modern, ironic sense. Cheesed "disgruntled, exasperated," is from 1941, British slang, but the connection is uncertain.

Interesting how far a slang term can drift over time.

Eh, Erin Gray was just one of several skinny and rather bland young women on TV at the time - I used to confuse her with Connie Selleca. Never my type. Some of it was age, I'm sure - probably if I'd been in my early teens and watching the show she'd have been fuel for fantasy.

Gotta say that she's got my vote in that scene with the dwarves, though. That couldn't have been easy to play.

I've been watching the Glen Larson Buck Rogers, it is so 70s cheesy. Totally without any political correctness. Enjoyed the lack of messages. ;)
Just what messages or political correctness from a fantasy sci-fi show set (at that time) 500+ years into the future?:wtf:

It appears to mean "Anything produced before 2003." I'm not exaggerating.

I watched the series through from beginning to end when it first came out on DVD, and I greatly enjoyed it because I had fond memories of it as a kid. I find the whole "does it have a message" thing irrelevant. The word is "entertainment", people. And the show entertained.

The big surprise for me was Season 2. I don't remember Season 2 very much from when I was a kid. Maybe I didn't watch it. But after 20 years of hearing the second season derided as awful, a waste of time, Gil Gerard wrecking the show, the Buck-Wilma relationship destroyed, silly storylines, I expected a trainwreck.
I too kind of grew up w/ the show, but find I liked both seasons equally. Although when watching one season I would want to be watching the other one.

And the BABES...Erin, Pamela, Jamie Lee Curtis, Barbara Luna, Markie Post, and MANY of those scantily dressed "female guest stars of the week" hotties! Even a young Dorothy Stratten....

The year of the show's setting is meaningless in terms of the show's values. All that matters is when the show is being produced and by whom.

This was a fun show, but dumb. A number of the producers and writers were not too distressed at its cancellation for any reasons other than loss of income - it was not a fun place to work due to egos on the set.
