Bryan Singer: Why 'Superman Returns' Didn't Work

Brandon Routh was, most definitely, indicative of the film: He looked the part, but his performance was as milquetoast as the rest of the production.

I might as well post this here too:

Brandon Routh was not one of the problems "Superman Returns" had. I really don't understand people's problem with him. There were all kinds of other problems in the movie other than Brandon. Considering this film was his first major blockbuster I think he did more than an adequate job in the role. His Clark Kent was bang on.

Well I can't speak for anybody else, but my problem with him was that he was hired to play Superman and Clark Kent, but instead played Christopher Reeve.

He should have brought his own interpretation to the character, but instead, he just mimicked Reeve, and that didn't help the movie at all.

That's probably because he was directed (you know, by the film's director) to mimic Christopher Reeve's performance.

The problem is, Routh played Kent and Superman with the nearly the exact same persona. At least Reeve managed a discernable difference between the two. :p

I don't know if I should be worried or not that Singer is still a part of the next film, he clearly doesn't think he did anything wrong, which in and of itself is Hollywood's real problem: they spend $300,000,000 on a film with a dodgy script and badly cast cast and figure they can fix it in post.

And while I won't again tag the Bosworth sucked as Lane, not enough action bandwagon, I will say this... I wish Superman Returned to Earth to find that Lex is not only the President, but a beloved President, and only Superman can see the real Lex. That would have rocked, but now that we're rebooting the series, the likely hood of seeing that is slim to none.

Um...what? Bryan Singer is not attached to "Man of Steel". Where did you get the impression that he is? Chris Nolan is Executive Producer and co-wrote the script with David Goyer. Zack Snyder is directing it.

Slight correction: Christopher Nolan is producing, along with Emma Thomas, and he co-conceived the story with David Goyer, who will likely get sole credit for writing the script (even though, according to rumors, Jonathan Nolan has been largely responsible for fixing some of the script's big problems).

^ Thanks for that, I knew I forgot about Jonah. Jonah has been involved in the rewriting process. Singer is not involved at all. I'm still not sure where DeadmeatDiggory got that from. Maybe he was confused with "X-Men: First Class".

I still find it ironic and amusing that Singer's proposed sequel to Superman Returns allegedly had the title Man of Steel, was going to be more action-oriented, and was going to have Kryptonians (perhaps not Zod) as villains.

Snyder's reboot is called Man of Steel, is going to be more action-oriented, and has Kryptonians as the villains.

I'm sure on some level Singer must be kind of kicking himself right now.

WB retained use of that title since Singer left. I guess that is why so many media outlets continued to call the sequel "Superman: Man of Steel" and called "Man of Steel" that as well. It was the production title as well. I don't know if Bryan is kicking himself. It's not really his fault he's not making a sequel. I mean the project was in limbo for years until recently after all. I'm sure on some level he's disappointed, he didn't get to finish the story he started.

I don't blame Singer...this is all WB. I would have liked Singer to deliver a movie soon after SR...but...now we got Nolan/Goyer/Snyder "Man Of Steel"...hopefully it will be good. :)

Disappointed is probably the better term. Singer's career is going fine. He did Valkyrie which was a terrific film (and the constant problems that plagued that production might have prohibited Singer from working on a Superman sequel as soon as WB would have liked; you never know).

He's directing Jack the Giant Killer for Warner Bros. so clearly the decision to reboot the Superman franchise didn't sour their working relationship. He's also producing X-Men: First Class for Twentieth Century Fox so he even managed to patch things up with Tom Rothman after departing X-Men 3.

Honestly, I'm pretty excited for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel even as someone who loves Bryan Singer and adored Superman Returns. I think you can view that movie now as a proper send-off of Richard Donner's moves and the conclusion of that universe. Man of Steel is the beginning of something new, and honestly I already prefer Snyder's casting decisions over Singer's (however, we'll see if Snyder's cast actually delivers).

As much as I liked Brandon Routh as Superman, and I'm kind of disappointed he's going to become the George Lazenby of the Superman franchise, I think Henry Cavill is probably better-suited for the role and I'm really looking forward to him as Clark Kent/Superman. I think Amy Adams will give Lois Lane way more spunk, attitude and personality than Kate Bosworth did. As tepid as I am about Zack Snyder as a filmmaker, I can't help but get excited over the reboot.

I haven't seen all of Zack Snyder's films...but I enjoyed Sucker Punch enough to feel he will be great with doing a Superman movie. :)

The only film of his that I've even remotely enjoyed or liked was his remake of Dawn of the Dead. Every other film he's made, besides maybe Watchmen, I just haven't been able to connect with.
