Bryan Fuller Stepping Back From Showrunner Role on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

If they are not going to trust a TV auteur like Fuller, and they plan to do it by committee (big surprise), then they need to bring in ALL of the old guard, not just Meyer and Menosky. Otherwise it's gonna be an ever more watered down version than the JJverse.

It's true that Trek is not defined by its creators (ironically), but the problem is today's market is not ideal for Trek. Without a creative force like Fuller it will be Berman/Braga all over again with more explosions.

No.

Constantly recycling the same creative folks over and over, combined with oversaturation is what doomed Trek to begin with. They need new people in the driver's seat. I have no real issue with Fuller stepping aside for people new to Trek.

Wow the biggest news to me is the budget. $9 million!!! Wow.

Fuller stepping down is no surprise at all.

They've changed the figure in the article to $6-7 million now.

That still puts it somewhere in the top 5 most expensive shows being produced. Amazing for show that's previous biggest success was airing in syndication.

Akiva Goldsman previously worked for Alex Kurtzman on Fringe. I can't comment on his work for that series, as I haven't seen it, but it's probably premature to dismiss him as the Batman & Robin guy.

We'll see what happens here.

I'm disappointed to hear this news...I hope this isn't a sign that things are a mess behind the scenes.

Also 'A Time to Kill,' 'Practical Magic,' 'A Beautiful Mind,' 'I, Robot,' 'Cinderella Man' and 'The Da Vinci Code/Angels and Demons.' So he can write good (by Hollywood standards) stuff, when he wants to and doesn't have a studio micromanaging his every move. And he's only produced/is producing Transformers 7/8 and Paranormal Activity 2-4, not written them (at least according to IMDb). His most recent script is 'Stephen King's The Dark Tower,' and I haven't heard much panic yet on that film.

Additionally, I thought the seasons of Fringe on which he worked were very good.

Besides, I've read his 'Batman & Robin' script. Most of the worst things we remember from that film (other than Arnie's dialogue) were added on the set. Nothing on the page about codpieces, neon, rubber nipples, butt shots or Bat-credit cards.

Plus, I find it's commonly forgotten than Goldsman-and Joel Schumacher-got tipped for the Batman films on the strength of their work on The Client. My thinking at at the time was, "Well, that was a pretty solid thriller. I imagine they could make a reasonable Batman movie."

I wonder if this series is ever going to be produced.

I don't buy the "too much on his plate" excuse. I'm betting it was a fallout between him and CBS.

Wake me up if there's any real news to come out of Star Trek Discovery after this. That is if they don't re-write the script again.

That still puts it somewhere in the top 5 most expensive shows being produced. Amazing for show that's previous biggest success was airing in syndication.

I was startled by that, too; that's a budget on par with Game of Thrones. I'd been wondering whether CBS thought of Star Trek as a program that needed a lot of polish to be done correctly, and I have my answer. We're a long way from Planet Hell.

I'm not overly concerned at this point to be frank. At least Fuller had the sense to step back, or CBS had the sense to ask him to step back as showrunner with so much on his plate. That said, someone screwed up. They should have figured out the scheduling conflicts a bit earlier, say when Discovery's production schedule was delayed.
I'm not overly worried about Goldman in the writers' room yet either.

Well this wasn't the best news to wake up to. I was looking forward to a Bryan Fuller Star Trek show, and now it's just some other guy with no relevance to the franchise.

It's such a major buzzkill.

So, they are handing the franchise reigns to someone who has worked with Kurtzman before, and may or may not be a Star Trek fan? That was terrible when we had a non-fan in charge of directing. We got TWOK and TUC.

I would recommend not panicking yet. Panic later.
