British football motto (?)

I was wondering if some of our British members could help me with a point of popular culture.

I remember reading somewhere (alas, I can't remember where) that there was a slight difference between American and British attitudes toward losing at football.

That the American attitude was summed up in Vince Lombardi's famous statement, "Winning isn't everything--it's the only thing."

But that the British attitude could be summed up in a somewhat different motto: "Never lose."

In other words: it doesn't matter if games end in a scoreless tie; just don't lose.

Furthermore, the author argued that this attitude had led to some pretty dour football in Britain in the 1970s, including a lot of professional fouls.

Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of this "never lose" motto? I can't for the life of me remember where I read this, and my internet searches have been fruitless.

why would anyone want their team to lose? :wtf:

If my local team loses they get no points, if they draw they get 1 point and if they win they get 3 points, if my team draws they get one point and that's a hell of a lot better than no points at all.

I've been a football fan my whole life (well, I'm on the verge of quitting but that's a different thread) and I don't recall that phrase ever really being in frequent use.

This thread reminds me of this famous quotation:
Bill Shankly said:
Someone said "football is more important than life and death to you" and I said "Listen, it's more important than that."

That's what I immediately thought of when I read this thread.

The idea of never losing at all costs is, however, pretty common amongst Premier League managers these days, though and is a big reason why I'm falling out of love with the game.

Typical Arsenal fan

I think that there is the significant difference. Only in American soccer (football) and ice hockey do ties count. In American football and baseball, they generally play on until there is a winner, although a tie is possible in American professional football but only during the regular season.

^ There are no more ties in the NHL. You either win (two points), lose in regulation, or lose in overtime\the shootout (1 point).

You've got to admit, it's as boring as hell lately. At least Chelsea learned how to pass, I suppose.

Is it fuck! The mostly tightly contested league table in years where a win or loss can leapfrog you six places, Villa legitimately challenging to crack the big four, England WINNING and winning with style. And last but by no means least the continuing soap opera that is Arsenal. Now if only Spurs would implode too....
