Brink Back Kirk Fans and Trek XI

Do you think the people at BringBackKirk.com will be happy with this new film? They've been shouting out to bring back Kirk since the late-90's, I believe. Would they accept a new actor playing Kirk?

I'm guessing that they would accept the movie more if Shatner is in it (as Kirk, of course).

Or, secondarily, if events in the film imply that Kirk might still be alive in an altered future, even if Shatner doesn't appear.

In any event, their numbers are too small to matter, one way or the other.

Which is equally as true for Trekkies as a whole.

Maybe they changed their website to "Bring Back Shatner" since they are getting Kirk back, just not in the form they were hoping? ;)

I have no idea of course if they will be able to accept Pine as Kirk or not. Heck I don't think any of us know that for certain until we actually see a bit of footage.

I could accept Pine as Kirk, as far as looks go. From that comparison thread, I never realized how closely he resembled young Shatner as Kirk. I'm sure of course they used a bit of make-up, but still, I was shocked at the resemblence :)

As far as I can tell, the BBK folks have been pretty low-key and open minded about this movie - they've reported a few of the twists and turns without much commentary. It may be that bringing back Kirk as a character and the TOS setting in general is intriguing enough that they're willing to wait and see.

Odd concept, that. ;)

Whoa, wait and see and not jump to conclusions based on little evidence? Surely you jest! ;)

I was thinking the same thing is possible...that they would heavily imply the the timeline was altered so that when Spock returns to the 24th century and at the very end of the film (maybe even in a scene after the ending credits, a practice which is so "in" these day) we see a shadow in Spocks apartment and hear Shatner's voice saying "where were you" or something like that -- then cut to black; film over.

It would be a moment, but also quite a gratuitous valentine. There would be no need for it as part of the story, I'm sure.

As far as bringing Kirk back goes, Kirk is back. I'll bet we see him in two more films after this one. He's just played by Chris Pine, now. I would rather see this film end with that Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise surrounded by the other six, ready for adventures we've yet to hear about. McCoy will make a joke at Spock's expense. Spock will raise an eyebrow and look perturbed. Kirk will make a mild dig at him, and everyone will break out into laughter as the camera pans back and the fanfare plays to the closing credits. OK, maybe not that last part. But in my opinion, the movie should end with the new and the upbeat, not the old and sentimental. It's their Trek, now.

^^ Yeah -- I know it would be gratuitous...I wasn't necessarily advocating that Abrams do this, I was just thinking that it is a possibility. Although I think Abrams is a little too savvy to do something as saccharine as this.

As far as bringing Kirk back goes, Kirk is back.

I'm not sure that would meet the BBK criteria, though.

Having done no research on the matter, my gut tells me that won't be good enough.

Ah, the heck with them! There are also people who say the Three Stooges aren't really the Three Stooges unless it's Moe, Larry, and Curly. [Oh, wait. I'm one of them. Never mind.]

Just wait until they see Pine with his tunic ripped. That'll win them over.

I think the BBK movement's stated goal is to have Shatner return as Kirk alive and well post nexus. The next best thing to them would be to at least have the Kirk character alive post Generations. A simple throw away line in the new film would make that possible. Chris Pine playing a younger version of Kirk does not achieve their goal.

Although if it is implied that Kirk survived the nexus due to some type of alternate time line the BBK movement may get their wish despite Shatner not being in the film. Perhaps that is why they have been so quiet?
