Bringing back an old game - Name the TrekLit Quote

Yes, the quote is from Before Dishonor.

After skimming through it to find a quote (on the off-chance that people wouldn't suspect me of going through BD to find a quote, or at least wouldn't think of that first) all the reasons why I disliked it came back, along with my heartburn and stomach distress.

It's your turn to pick a quote Marian.

If you'll excuse me, I have some Tums to locate.

M'Benga used to regale the others in Sickbay with the story of his first assist on a cryocardial bypass and how the Vulcan on the table had carried on an animated conversation about wildflowers with the attending surgeon while the surgeon held his frozen heart in one hand and sutured with the other, neither surgeon nor patient nor heart missing a beat.

This is obscure as hell, so I'll give you a clue right off the bat. Reagan was president when it was published.

Marian

Okee dokee.

Once the asinolyathin had been administered, she began to take over care of the patient. She had seen third-degree burns such as this only a few times in her life, but they were never the same twice. She did everything she could, thought of every possible treatment, but after a few frantic minutes, the antiquated monitors ceased to pick up life signs.

Selar fought to resuscitate the young man, but it was for naught. Finally, she stopped. There was no bringing this patient back. A sharp anger started to fill her, and once again she suppressed it. She took a step away from the exam table.

Ah, romance. Speaking of which, here's mine:

As she pulled his shirt off him, her eyes were drawn to his scar. Her fingers, tiny creatures full of curiosity, explored the shape and dimension of the damaged flesh.

"How?" she asked.

"An indiscretion," he said. "A blade in the wrong hands. And an artificial heart."

"Don't your people have cosmetic surgery?"

"They do," he said. "And maybe someday I'll let them take care of it. But for now, I like the reminder."

She looked up at him slyly. "And your heart? It's an adequate replacement for the one you lost?"

He smiled a little, brushing her cheek with the back of his hand. "There is a way to find out..."

Just a note: I'm turning in for the night, so it'll be a few hours before I'm back online to hand out the accolades (or hints, if required).

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
