I recall twice wanting to leave a movie well before it was finished but, in each case, I was everyone’s ride home, so I endured each movie to its bitter (to me). The first was the original Red Dawn in the 80s and the second was The Blair Witch Project (that one still owes me 81 minutes of my life).

Oh, understood. There absolutely may be considerations which lead to a decision not to leave, and I've more than once sat through to the end of a movie I wasn't especially enjoying. But it is ultimately voluntary.

The point I was attempting to make is that no one is ever truly trapped in a movie theater by anything other than their own choice. The door is always right there, unlocked, with required-by-statute lights guiding the way.

I totally concur. Absent extenuating circumstances, no one need sit through a film (or any other entertainment) that’s so repellent to one’s expectations.

I also really wanted to "walkout" on a Jackass movie, but I was at the Drive-In with friends and had no choice but to stay.

Also, theaters have policies like that for a reason. It's part of doing business.

Yeah, I see it as a voluntary assumption of risk. I don't return books I don't like or ask for a cable/streaming discount if I don't like a show I watched.

A happy customer is a returning customer. It costs them essentially nothing to refund your one ticket since the sunk costs of running a film are the same that hour whether you’re there or not. So it’s smarter in the long run to make you happy.

Had you eaten a meal and asked for a refund, different matter, they’re out the cost of the food.

It's not like a bad movie will turn me off future unrelated movies, or that I'd change theaters because I once saw a bad movie in one.

Exactly, it's not like getting a shitty slice of pizza. The quality of the film has no bearing on the movie theater. You picked the film. You pay your money, you take your chances. I've walked out of exactly 2 movies in my entire life. I never even occurred to me to ask for my money back. I never even asked for my money back when I have a shitty slice of pizza. I just don't return to the pizzeria.

I've rewatched Star Trek and Into Darkness this week and loved them both so much (cringy Khaaaan! scream aside which we laughed off), watching Beyond this weekend. I love these movies and doubt the 4th will be made, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I've never walked out of a theater. I took the time to go so I'll sit through the movie no matter how bad. I just won't go see it again and seriously consider watching it on home video or TV.
