Yeah, if the Kelvin universe comes more and more in sync with the Prime universe then eventually we'll have two Prime universes and that seems a bit redundant. It's big gimmick is that it's entirely canon and yet it's not a prequel. It doesn't have to lead to a future we've already seen. We know exactly where Strange New Worlds is going, but in the Kelvin movies anything can happen next!

Which is something I wish they'd taken more advantage of than just killing off Pike. I want to see anything happen!

While watching ‘09 the other day I was thinking about how far they went. Romulus gone in Prime, and then the Kelvin version of Amanda killed off followed by the destruction of Vulcan and the near extinction of the Vulcan species.

Then I was thinking how in retrospect it really was a shame that they had to riff off of Khan for the next movie.

‘09 is all about pushing boundaries and doing things that had never been done in Trek. I’d love to see a fourth movie be as brave, because I don’t think the subsequent ones really captured that feeling again.

Its quite possible to rehash stories from Trek lore but still push boundaries.
  • Q puts Kirk on trial instead of Picard and has him meet the Borg.
  • Redo Generations, but with Archer in the Kirk role and Kirk in the Picard role. Except Archer isn’t allowed to die, or the timeline will change even more.
  • Redo Insurrection, but with Cardassian antagonists and they haven’t yet become the fascists they’re infamous for in the 24th century prime timeline
  • Redo Nemesis, but with Kirk clone in the Shinzon role, Romulan doppelganger of Spock in the Lore role, and Nero’s half-Klingon daughter in the Sela role. Maybe a transporter clone for Scotty or McCoy for the Thomas Riker role.
  • Do the movie version of “The Chase” from TNG, but with Kirk and the gang having to work with Kruge and his crew.
  • Enterprise works with Tholians to face down the Doomsday Machine
There's no shortage of ideas. Its amazing that there hasn't been a new Trek movie every couple of years.

2009 was so original and gutsy. That's part of why STID is such a thudding disappointment to me. It just didn't even try to a large extent.
Unfortunately, the comics continued that idea in some regards, including with Gary Mitchell and the Return of the Archons. It creates such a small sandbox of ideas for the team to work with and it is frustrating. I love STID but it is because of Marcus and Kirk, and not Khan, though Cumberbatch is stellar in that role.

Into Darkness is the only one I've never rewatched and I think I need to correct that considering how much my opinion has shifted from negative to positive regards '09 over the years. I've only seen it once, but I recall I was not impressed at all.

It's very rare for anyone to grow more fond of Into Darkness over time in my experience. But I hope you do because I enjoyed the film a lot and I think there's a lot to like in there. You just have to get past all that other stuff.

I would be curious, regardless of the outcome, to see how you feel about it.

I’d have thought with a century of being forewarned that the Romulans are planning for their sun ‘sploding. Maybe by pursuing a more harmonious and peaceful relationship with everyone else? Or just transplanting to a different homeworld

Count me as a rare one. Into Darkness is my favourite Trek film of all (and I’ve been watching Trek since 1973]. Moreover, I like it better each time I watch it.

Ni'var happens sooner. Romulans are splintered, and the Empire seeks to expand, resulting in conflict the Cardassians.

I'm kinda hoping Star Trek XIV is like a cross between TMP and TUC. Don't forget the Klingons aren't probably too happy about the events of Into Darkness and probably want revenge. and with praxis exploding 44 years earlier than expected, they maybe more aggressive in expanding their territory (especially since the Klingons are analogous to the Russians here in the Real World.)

I do like this quite a bit. I think it would be nice to see the increase in Klingon expansionism and Kirk having to weave his way through the diplomatic pitfalls while preventing war.
