More details from Variety.

"The studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back."

Well that can't be right. Nobody likes Abrams Trek.

They could do the monster maroon era to explain the time gap. Have Kirk an admiral
If the same time has passed in-universe then the film is going to be set around 2270, the year that Prime Kirk's five year mission ended. So unfortunately we've still got the Motion Picture uniform era to get through first. Of course it's an alternate universe so they can do what they like with the uniforms.

The uniforms have never been a problem. They have been better than the new Star Trek shows in that department.

They changed the writers again:

Last year Abrams hired WandaVision’s Matt Shakman to helm the film. It was also reported last year that a script had been written by Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel). But according to today’s Variety, the current script was written by Josh Friedman (Avatar 2) and Cameron Squires (WandaVision), based on the earlier draft by Beer and Robertson-Dworet.

Who knows the 7 year break may actually work in it's favour this time over say a 4 year break for a highly anticipated sequel. Your casual moviegoers may see it as a fresh reboot of sorts and go watch it. Though I admit I am clutching at straws here.

I love the JJverse and I'm happy to hear this. I'm already wondering if they'll use the Enterprise A as seen at the end of Beyond.
The trend these days is to give people new designs with every movie so I'm expecting that if we do get the A it'll look a little different.

I'm hoping it looks a little different anyway. Just a few tweaks to the pylons and the front of the nacelles is all I want. Maybe a bit of an undercut on the saucer. Also that neck isn't quite right.

Well, this is gonna bomb. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so. I wonder what kind of audience research they did? I hope it's not the same guys as they used in 2014/2015... We all know how Beyond ended.

I had hoped for something truly fresh, new and exciting. No Enterprise, No Kirk or Spock... But since BadRobot is involved it will be another rehash and mindless action scenes and a movie without any real substance. Oh well, I guess they will never learn.
