BREAKING: Paramount Sets Top Secret Star Trek Movie For Summer 2023; To Be Produced By J.J. Abrams

This does seem like a really weird move, giving up a lot of their negotiating power like this. Then again they've made exactly zero movies in the last five years by following their previous strategy so perhaps giving Chris Pine what he wants is the better move.

Plus as much as people like the Kelvin crew, the actors have to realise that they're second cast to play the roles, and Spock #3 just got his own show, so they're not irreplaceable.

Oh Lord.

Paramount seems either clueless or beyond desperate. Or both.

J.J. Abrams is the one who announced it, so one can presume he did so with the assumption that the stars were willing to do it. The difficulty now is that you have actors with divergent careers, and are not under contract. You have to get them to agree first, then try to find a window that works for all of them, and the director (whoever that will be) at once. We've been down this road before, as this is the THIRD major start to a fourth film since 2018. Why would this one be any different, I don't know?

Paramount meanwhile is a complete wreck of a film studio. Their biggest commodity is nearly a senior citizen (Tom Cruise), and continue to churn out Transformers movies that wreak, as well as squeezing whatever lifeforce remains from TMNT, Sponge Bob, Sonic the Hedgehog, and yes, Star Trek. So many tired, tired, tired franchises.

The way these large scale action franchises work, you spend a monstrous amount of money, then hope to hit big on the international b.o. (mostly China so don't piss them off with your script), as the domestic gross just won't cut it anymore. I suspect the Paramount accountants have waged that another Trek film, even if they have to pay the cast a boatload, will still be okay financially.

Jesus Christ. Not having any of the actors signed is bad enough, but none of the reps even knew this was in the works? Remarkable incompetence from Paramount.

If literally nothing else, before the public announcement you give the reps a heads up that an offer is coming! People get pissed off when they are blindsided like this. That alone adds $$$ to their price.

I've been out of casting for years now, but turns out something like this can still piss me off from a professional angle. This is incompetence so extreme it's malpractice.

Well....seems like this movie isn't going to be made either. Great job JJ! You just shot yourself in the foot. We've had 4 different Trek series made since Beyond, and I am okay with Trek staying on the small screen for now. I think they should just adapt the 4th movie and make it either a tv movie or miniseries at this point.

This is addressed in the article. Apparently Paramount is willing to take the hit on actors' contracts in order to reel in investors. Seems like an odd strategy to me but we'll see...

In fact, the budget will now likely have to account for talent deals that may be supersized. Industry insiders say that Paramount let go of negotiating leverage in order to have a key chess piece as it courts Wall Street investors.

Can't Paramount take the movies off Bad Robot (JJ is supposed to be with WarnerMedia now anyway) and hand it to Secret Hideout? Would make sense

They wouldn't pay Chris Pine's previously agreed price in 2018, hope he gets what he wants this time.

But in light of this information, I doubt the movie will get made. Seems like it was to impress potential investors, nothing more:(

I guess ultimately it depends on how impressed those investors were.

No investment, no film.

Which of course means Star Trek fans liked it the best of the three. ;)

I don’t understand how it had and a $185 million budget and a box office gross of $343.5 million, and yet according to analysts it still did not break even, but there is a lot I don’t understand.

It's because of marketing costs, which are separate from the production budget and are very, very high in recent years. Global marketing for a movie of this type is usually at least $150 million, and can easily get up to twice that amount. So a movie needs to make back the production budget plus marketing costs just to break even.

Though in the case if ST:BEY, Simon Pegg blamed the low box office performance on poor marketing... the marketing push started too late, and it was marketed like "Fast in Furious in Space" which really wasn't what the movie was actually like, and the marketing also spoiled a couple surprises in the movie.

Zoe Saldana could be the toughest of the actors to nail down. I believe she's the second highest-grossing actress of all time at this point, so she'll command a hefty salary, and she may be tied up with production on Avatar 4 and 5 (and any potential reshoots for GOTG Vol. 3).

I think they recast John Boy on later Waltons series or tv movies. Using Saldana as Spock’s girlfriend seems a bit of a waste. Recast, or make it a beefier part. Frankly, I think Bones and Scotty would be the least recastable, due to their actors’ unique faces and inflections. I’d recast Spock.

If money is an issue. That’s where the discussion was drifting. Anybody dashing can play Kirk. I just don’t care for Quinto, and Uhura has been underserved, scriptwise imho.
