BREAKING: Official Fan Film Guidelines Issued

Presumably, that's why the overwhelming majority of actual fan film producers -- rather than retirees, assistants, and the peanut gallery -- are looking at this as the end of the world, rather than as a "new beginning"... a beginning that exists primarily in the heads of people who never liked fan films to begin with!
I'm going to respectfully disagree. People are panicking, and they're doing so prematurely.

The sky is not falling. And on reflection I don't believe it will.

I was concerned. I've had time to consider what this means and I am no longer concerned. People can read whatever they like into that but I'd appreciate not being counted as one of those contemplating the end of the world.

I'll go as far to say I'm confident we'll be back in business soon.

Good to hear. As much as I have enjoyed your longer productions...your shorter ones are money.

Thanks. We don't know all the implications, but while I think we might need to adapt a little, I'm optimistic. Watch this space.

I think the reaction from fans may get CBS to loosen the rules a little, there has been quite a bit of backlash.

It's more a case of 'if you don't ask you don't get' rather than being angry and yelling and boycotting them! Positive action gets positive results.

I don't have really any interest in fan films, but recognise that to others they are important, but these guidelines seem reasonable given the circumstances at hand.
To be honest I would rather listen to a Star Trek audio series than watch a fan film. Think about audio all you fan filmsters. Check out Big Finish the Doctor Who audios, if you aren't already aware of them. They actually have a, gasp, licence!
Do any guidelines exist or fan audios? The Star Trek universe is only as limited as your own imaginations. Use it!

My point is that fan films probably wouldn't get nearly the attention they have been since 2009, if not for the fact certain segments of Trek fandom feel alienated by the JJverse, and have turned to the fan films as an alternative outlet. Also, by cutting a lot of ties to previous actors, producers, and set/ship designers, at least the first two movies have alienated former Star Trek employees. That created a perfect storm, and it was probably inevitable something like Axanar was going to happen. IF it wasn't Alec Peters, it would have been someone else doing the same thing.

Fan films are happening now because it's easy to make and distribute them now. If all this tech had been available 15 years ago, there'd have been rabid fan film nutters going on about how they're the real Star Trek and not that damn BermanTrek crap. Or has everyone forgotten how much hate there used to be for other incarnations of Star Trek from certain groups of fans?

There was a ton of hate for certain Trek series the one's I remember the most were Voyager and Enterprise. Voyager I grew to appreciate as it started to come into it's own as much as I loved where Enterprise went it took them so long to do something meaningful with that show and These are the voyages is one of the worst finales of all time....

I think he was saying that if Lucas had obtained the rights to make a Flash Gordon movie, it likely would have been long forgotten by now, but that the "constraints" of not having the rights to play in that sandbox allowed for the creation of Star Wars.
Bingo!

Fan films have existed for as long as Super 8 cameras have been available. The tech to distribute them and make them has certainly gotten cheaper in the past decade, but that shouldn't be read as all the fan films are happening now. It just means that more people are sharing what they may have already been working on.

Also, people only hate Abrams Trek now ;)

But, it was a love letter to fans!

That's not true at all. MAD Magazine parodies whatever they want when they want. They've published entire collections of Star Wars material. Robot Chicken makes as many parodies of properties as they want. And don't forget this exists and was a long time series available in major book stores. I remember buying one at Waldens when I was in junior high.
You're totally misunderstanding what I was saying. Those are all still periodic parodies. MAD doesn't and couldn't feature a series parodying Star Trek every single issue.

Thanks for that I did not know Hardware Wars did a Special Edition

Captain Proton rules!
OK so if I made a Voyger FF and then a Captain Proton FF would that be a squeal if used the same talent as Paris / Proton and Janeway/ Queen Arachnia?

Thank you for your inspirational, optimistic outlook - it is needed here :D

I think you will first need to assemble a team of high powered amature lawyers who has never handled a professional film production case before and ask them.
