Brandon Routh leaving Superman?

Someone, after all those years, couldn't imagine that reporter at the Daily Bugle without glasses and go, "Holy shit cakes, it's Superman!"

Superman works at the Daily Bugle? Damn, Final Crisis really did reshape the DC Universe! :p

Oops. Got Marvel on the brain apparently!

Don't feel bad. I totally missed a "CANON VIOLATION!" opportunity. :p

If it means anything, in the movie the kid noticed the Clark/Superman connection. :p

Haha, yeah. I loved that shot, IIRC, with the kid looking up at Clark, with Superman in the background on the TV.

This story on comingsoon.net about the lawsuit brought by the relatives of the creators of Superman is somewhat illuminating. WB chairman has testified (on oath, presumably) that there is no Superman movie in production, no script in development and that the earliest that a new movie can be expected is 2012.

HOWEVER, the judge pointedly said that the rights to the character would revert to the heirs in 2013 and that if there was no new movie in development by 2011, the movie rights would revert to them.

Looks pretty clear that there will be a movie in production by 2011 then - can't see WB being prepared to lose the rights. I hope they don't throw a perfunctory low-budget one out like the 1990s Fantastic Four movie, just to ensure retention of the rights.

Yeah I saw that too. I'm sure 2011 gives them enough time to come up with a decent story and director though. Plenty of movies nowadays, like Trek, came together pretty quickly and turned out just fine.

In a way though, I almost wish the deadline was 2010. Then the WB's only option would probably be to gear up a SR sequel, since that world and those actors have already been established and they wouldn't have to start completely from scratch.

^ Not sure, but I wouldn't have thought so, otherwise the subject wouldn't have arisen. After all, WB are releasing various animated Supes movies - if they sufficed, Horn wouldn't have had to discuss the prospect of a live movie.

Superman seems to be the only comic property(that I know of) where the family of the created character is actively pursuing ownership.

I don't hear of Bob Kane & Bill Finger descendents trying to wrestle away Batman.
Same for Moulton's family with Wonder Woman.

I guess Marvel doesn't have this issue since Stan Lee either created or co-created around a dozen of the companies most commercial characters and his blessing is obvious.

Superman was created before the other comic properties you think of. Also, Superman was created by Seigel and Shuster and then sold to DC as opposed to being created by employees of DC. All of this combines to complicate the legal standing.

Finally, copyright terms has been extended a number of times since Superman was created. There is even a Superman rule dealing with rights sold when copyright terms were x years and then later extended.

I hope they don't put out a shitty movie just to help them along in the legal stuff. That would suck.

They want make a Syuperman movie quickly.

Get jerry Sienfeld to spearhead the project, he's like one of those nutball suvivalists waiting in their bunker for the bomb to drop, for making a Superman Movie.

I bets he could have it in cinemas in less than a week from after they give him the thumbs up.

Supes returns from an extended unannounced absence. Kent returns at the same time under the same circumstances.

This was a big problem. No one noticing Kent is Superman is one thing; we know it is ridiculous, but it's just the way it is so you live with it. And its amusing when the characters consider the possibility, then dismiss it. But the simultaneous extended absences and simultaneous returns not noticed by the "sharp" reporting minds who know both the Superman/Kent the best, thrust that issue right into the forefront where it can't stand up to that kind of examination. It would have been better if the film navigated around it so the viewer doesn't think about it too much; its too delicate a conceit to do otherwise.

In the comics didn't Lois always suspect Clark, but could never get him to admit it? He also used the Superman Androids to deflect attention from himself - by being Clark while the android patrolled. I think that having a body double of some sort would really go a long way to getting people to ignore Clark.

Personally, I'm glad we're NOT talking about a sequel to Superman Returns, because that would've likely been as abysmal as the first one. I'd like a Superman movie too, but you know what? I want a good one.
I'm SO on the same page with you, Emp.:techman:

So that would be a no then for teaming Michael Bay, Brett Ratner, McG and Paul WS Anderson together for the next Superman movie?

For kicks, WB should let Uwe Boll make the next Superman movie. I would be morbidly curious to see what he would do.

Why should we all suffer? Go find some other way to satisfy your morbid curiosity.

Hey, no one would force you to watch it.

Besides, Uwe Boll making a Superman movie. You know, I don't think there is another way to satisfy my morbid curiosity on that particular idea. It would be terribly, no doubt. But, my, what a spectacular wreck that would be.

And you do realize that I wasn't serious, right? :vulcan:

Please be assured that my reply was in the same spirit.

Memo to everyone who would like to throw Brandon Routh over the side, just for the sake of a Superman reboot:

You just learned this week that producers of Green Lantern were considering Justin Timberlake for the lead. Do you have an unfailing trust in the studio to find a better Superman than Routh? If so, why?

Without question I'd risk someone new. Routh's performance was so uninspired, so bland, so hollow that I'd enjoy a really bad performance more than what he gave.

"Supermannequin" indeed. :p

I thought Routh was great as Clark/Superman, and I would love to see him again, but if the next movie is a reboot, then I would say they move on to another actor.
