Brainstorming for Relaunch Fanfic

Greetings. I've been inspired to write more for my DS9 Relaunch fanfic, New Blood and am currently doing some brainstorming for it.

For further reference here's where I first discussed my two original characters and the two minor TNG characters: Deep Space Nine Relaunch Ideas.

The part I'm brainstorming is writing two of the new DS9 crew members being married to one another (my OC, Carl Draper and a TNG minor character, Robin Lefler). I've found New Frontier to be helpful for characterizing the latter and I've got ideas for the former.

From my previous post here is my description of the two:

Lieutenant Carl Draper, a veteran of Starfleet's Asymmetric Warfare Group (a Starfleet Special Operations Unit I made up) and a trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal operative. He's a veteran of the Dominion War, engagements with the Maquis prior to that, and a skirmish or two against the Klingons. He is married to Robin Lefler (the backstory of their relationship will be explored in my story). His issues with PTSD are balanced by the love he has for his wife.

Lieutenant Robin Lefler-Draper, newly transferred from Jupiter Station (working with Dr. Lewis Zimmerman) she has been moved to Deep Space Nine to serve as the Chief of Operations with Nog serving as Chief Engineer. Potential source of interpersonal conflict is Nog maybe feeling a bit resentful that Lefler got put into his job.

Right now the thing on my mind is their backstory for their relationship.

I've written Lefler as having worked at Jupiter Station for Dr. Zimmerman alongside Reginald Barclay and Carl having been stationed on Earth with the Asymmetric Warfare Group (where deployments all over the quadrant frequently occured) while they were seriously dating.

They'd first met around 2370 (my story takes place in 2375) when attending a conference on Earth. Since Carl's first Starfleet job, EOD, in my universe falls under Starfleet Corps of Engineers, I figured he was giving a briefing on Maquis and Cardassian improvised explosive devices and explosive detection techniques.

I'm still a bit fuzzy on how exactly the two could've met and could use a bit of help there.

Addendum: I am currently brainstorming on details from The First Duty episode, thinking of how the fallout from that might've led to Robin and Wesley getting into a fight (and maybe being the beginning of the end for their relationship). I could use some help with details not covered in the Memory Alpha article.

Unfortunately your ideas of Deep Space Nine's future clash. We both agree they need a better send-off than than the Dominion war gave them.

What about Deep Space Nine as a gathering point for ships from all four quadrants as a proper send-off?

Perhaps they met at a scientific conference on bio-engineered, mimetic, exploding lifeforms or something? ST characters are always jetting off to scientific conferences...

A building is hosting two conferences. The Asymmetric Warfare Conference and a Warp Field Theory conference. Lefler is attending the Warp theory conference. Both let out for lunch in the adjoining restaurants, including a bar in the atrium. Lefler and Draper, both head separatley for the atrium bar and have a seat. A minute a part maybe. Or less. Now all it takes is small talk, an offer to buy a drink. Whatever.

Or maybe they are staying at the same hotel, and it's a hotel bar.
