Both Sides Give Me a Headache

Those for and against have largely fallen into two archetypes, both of which are seriously starting to get on my nerves.

For: OMG, THIS IS THE BEST EVER, ANYONE WHO THINKS OTHERWISE IS A TOTAL LOSER!

Against: THIS VIOLATES CANON, IT IS CRAP!

Rational discourse falls by the wayside and it's hard to get a thought in edgewise.

Ummm, aren't you the one who said...

The whole movie is lazily scripted with not even a modicum of sound believability in presenting them as officers of any organization with any military decorum.

...in this thread (bold mine)?

With all due respect, that does not sound like a moderate or balanced comment. Maybe you didn't use all caps, but it's hardly a subtle statement. And I say that as someone who has his own issues with the movie (but, for the most part, likes it).

It's rare to find anyone here that is able to say the movie was fun but it was still badly done (Brutal Strudel does a great job of doing this balancing act).

Anyone else getting a little tired of it all?
Will this unite both sides?
OMG, THIS IS THE BEST EVER CANON VIOLATOR, ANYONE WHO THINKS OTHERWISE IS CRAP.

I refuse to be apologetic for Trek being critically praised, financially successful, and widely popular.

No one in this thread has asked you to. Perhaps you were looking for another thread?

Please forgive him...he's been diagnosed with a Trek Tourette's

I just want to say that even the most composed person has slips from time to time.

Exactly. And even when I do vent some, I try to keep it aimed at things that are bothering me and not at the people.

And I've posted over six hundred times, I'm bound to go farther than I ordinarily might.

And it goes back to changing my word choice at the start as someone far smarter than me pointed out, I'm just wishing people treated each other with a fair amount of respect.

We posters just enjoy contradicting each other. It makes us feel special. If some of us have to demonize you, OP, in the process. Or is that just passion with an occasional splash of paranoia?

*sigh*
contradicting each other = taking extreme positions. (Even if it often goes a bit beyond our position. We all take extreme positions against those whose opinions are contrary to our own, as a counter-strike.) Isn't that what you are complaining about?

demonize you = those in this thread who insist you are on the opposite side in spite of your declaration of objectivity. Their excuse? Being passionate about what they love, and loving makes us a bit protective and/or paranoid.

Is that clear enough? Or am I wasting my time?

You don't need to be so uptight, ria 75 - your original post isn't that clearly written

Although the condescension wasn't necessary, the explanation will suffice.

Yes, I do think people are quick to jump to conclusions about ideas which run contrary to their own opinion. Probably as a result of that paranoia you're talking about there.
