Boondock Saints 1 and 2

I'm interested in seeing these two films; I'm also a fan of Sean Patrick Flannery, an actor I wouldn't mind working with in the future...

How are these films?

I know there was some drama behind-the-scenes with director Troy Duffy, which spawned a documentary--called Overnight--I would like to see soon.

Fun first film.

Still trying to find time to see the second, and someone to see it with.

The first one is tons of fun, loved every minute of it.

The second one is fun, but not as good as the first one. I was expecting a little more action than what was there, so I was kind of disappointed, but it's still worth a watch.

My brother really wants to see the second one, so when he's in town later this week I'll likely go. That said, I thought the first film was shallow, cheap, and exploitative, and not nearly worth the devotion given to it by so many of my contemporaries. I must have seen that film poster in at least 25% of the college dorm rooms that I've been in.

But, plainly, I (and, it seems, most critics) just don't get it.

I haven't seen Overnight, but how could the documentary not be more interesting than the movie(s)? How can you top a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a first-time filmmaker striking it big with a $15 million budget and a major studio backing him who has a major bridge-burning ego that causes the studio and the budget to disappear?

I've seen both films as well as Overnight. Yes, the first film is extremely fun to watch and has some interesting WTF moments. The vigilante aspect of the Saints is definitely a guilty pleasure in many ways. The second movie is also very well done. I don't want to spoil any of it for you, but the new one has quite a jaw-dropping ending which was certainly designed to leave room for at least one more sequel.

"Overnight" is another matter altogether. It was quite a disturbing "sausage" look into the making of the first film and the descent of favor that the writer, Troy Duffy, experienced while executing it. He claims it was a smear job, although it is difficult to reconcile that statement with the actual events that were caught on tape behind-the-scenes. He really did seem to go out of his way to piss off the people around him trying to help make this movie. Apparently, even Harvey Weinstein stopped returning his calls - definitely a "you broke my heart, Fredo" moment. My only advice on this particular film is to get it and draw your own conclusions about it. All documentaries, by definition, are biased to varying degrees, despite whatever the author's best efforts may or may not be.

However, despite all that, Duffy did seem to dig himself out of the ashes somehow to create a new and quite enjoyable film. I didn't find the new soundtrack to be as inspiring as the first, however, even going so far as recycling my favorite track, "The Blood of Cuchulainn", but the rest of it was quite good.

Thanks for the comments, everyone....:techman:

^^

Yeah, I saw some clips from Overnight, and Duffy put himself in a corner with his comments...which were, as aforementioned, caught on tape and upset a lot of people who could have potentially furthered his career...

Haven't seen either the sequel or the Overnight documentary, but I do have a soft spot for the original film. It's one of my younger brother's favorites, and while I don't necessarily out-and-out love it to the degree that so many young whippersnappers do these days, I certainly found it a diverting bit of shoot-'em-up crackerjack entertainment!

Well, my brother wanted to see the new film, so we went last night. Up until the end, which was a great cliffhanger, I thought it was pretty tedious. Too much time spent with the secondary characters, none of whom are played by actors who can act. Surprisingly light on action, and the brothers, too. Billy Connonlly, as he was in the original, is again wasted, appearing only in brief snippets for the first two-thirds of the film. Julie Benz's accent was surprisingly bad. And the editing, like the first film, seemed to hop from one cool thing to the next with little thought given to overall form or pace.

I caught the sequel last week. Very faithful to the formula of the first film, but the cliffhanger definitely piques my interest for a third installment. To be honest, my expectations were pretty low, and I came out pleasantly surprised.
