Blu-Ray packaging oddity

My TNG season 1 Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk didn't come with a slip case. Well, I don't think it did. I've spent ages looking for it in the house but to no avail. I'd never have thrown it, so I have to assume I didn't get one. All my other seasons through to 6 have covers.

Slightly annoying as they don't all line up the same on the shelf.

Might see if I can get hold on an S1 cover at some point.

Could just take the slip covers off the others?

I know, but however much this probably goes against the grain for most people, I actually like them.

I, personally, think they're a pain in the rear.

I honestly don't see any use for those slip-covers, for one simple reason: Whatever is on them, is exactly the same as what's on the covers of the BR/DVDs they enclose. Slip-covers add absolutely nothing of value - just wasted cardboard and useless bulk. So why do they exist at all?

Not always the same. I must say, I do like the slipcover for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD (nice matte black with the SHIELD logo, covering up the cast photo on the actual Blu-ray case) Otherwise, I can take or leave them.
For me, it's all about the content (extras included) which is what made the first release of STiD so maddening (different packages AND different extras!)

Steelbooks are kind of cool, but I wouldn't double-dip just for some metal! Plus, then I'd have to find an undented metal case and this can send one down the road to OCD.

I get irritated by the lack of slipcovers in series sets when I've already gotten sets that have them. I appreciate a sense of unity and conformity, and of the few remaining DVD sets and Blu-Rays I have chosen to keep, that's usually a small consideration. It'd be nice if it wasn't something to worry about, but I do understand the frustration.

Yeah I agree. It's different when, for example, the TNG 'separate release' Blu-Rays (Best of Both Worlds, Redemption, Unification, Chain of Command, All Good Things) have got cardboard slipcase covers with their own different artwork from the inlay contained within the case, as that makes them collectable pieces. But when you've got the season sets with the cardboard slipcases where the artwork is identical to the paper inlay, such as with the TNG or TOS season sets, then I must admit I usually just throw the cardboard slipcase away. I'm perfectly happy with just the regular amaray case on my shelf.

I do know people who swear by keeping cardboard slipcases though. They tell me it's added protection for the plastic amaray case within, but I'm not sure if I really buy that.

I definitely don't. You'd still have to remove the slipcover and then get at the actual case, to access the BR or DVD that's contained within, so there's no real protection involved.

I have said to them before that if you drop a plastic amaray case on the floor and it breaks, and the discs all spill out of their spindles and scratch, then it being wrapped inside a thin layer of cardboard is hardly going to make a difference in 'protecting' it one way or another.

I sort of feel this way even about the discs themselves. On the Hawaii Five-O DVD's, for instance, the first few seasons have the photo labels on the discs. It makes it nice and easy to identify which is which, i.e. Season 1, disc 2. On the later ones it's just a silver blank disc with the only identifier being the text encircling the hole...the uber-tiny text that you practically need a microscope to read. It's annoying and impractical.

I don't really care about the sleeves. I'll keep them around, but I won't "use" them as they'd look like shit almost immediately due to wear and tear. Also, I'm kinda OCD about the way they'd look uneven on my shelf.

yes same here. Strange. Maybe as S2 was noticeably cheaper than 1/3 they decided to hold back the sleeve? (if they thinking trekkies wouldn't notice/care they strongly mistaken!)

I believe this is actually a thing that happens.
