BLSSDWLF's TOS Enterprise WIP

Posting up a rough WIP layout of The Cage Conference Room for those interested. Since my camera match is so-so I'd say use this with a grain of salt. A scale is on each view set at 1' increments.

That's it! That's an awesome find. I thought it was a reflection on the table but now zoomed in I see that it's in the leaf insert. Thanks for finding that @BK613 !

@blssdwlf Never noticed this before but did you take into account that the conference table appears to accommodate the slide projector via a notch? One that was repaired in WNMHGB or, more likely, has a leaf insert. Maybe that is what is throwing you off.

Purely accidental find. I had noticed that the base of the projector cabinet appeared to be flush with the base of the table and I speculated that they may have truncated one end of the table to allow for that. I was looking for such a truncation in the WNMHGB images when I notice the outline of the insert.

Having worked with PBR materials for quite a few years now, I will say that it appears your materials on the Burke chairs are a little too glossy. I'd raise the roughness values a tad. Otherwise it's looking great!

I agree and thanks @Donny. I've got the colors on color node and nothing else on the BSDF shader so it's definitely defaulting to glossy. I just located a good writeup on Lightwave's PBR materials on Foundation3D and will be doing a bunch of tests.

Trying to find a good workflow to create the different maps. I think the roughness and specularity look close enough to the screen version but I realize now that I should use something closer to the on screen lighting for the colors... :)

Just skimmed through this thread. I love everything you're doing, but especially the photo-matching. That's the thing I always want to see people do when they model sets and props. It's such a nice thing to go beyond something looking about 95% accurate, to showing that something IS accurate by laying it over reference images.

Also, I'm very impressed with your Burke chairs. Your first image actually had me doubting I was looking at models because their geometry was so dead on. I've seen a lot of chair models over the years and yours look better than any of them. However, I was a little unsure if you got the points of the feet just right. They look slightly softer than the more angular look of the real chairs. If you want to ask for details from some people who own some, I can perhaps facilitate that.

Also, just a general observation. Do you suppose that viewer was built around a commercial item or was it completely custom? I've been looking around to see if I can find a vintage rear projection screen that matches the characteristics of this item.

@Lt. Washburn - Thanks :) Yeah the Burke chairs were quite challenging. The points on mine are softer and I think that comes from one of the reference photos I was using. But now looking at the chairs in other scenes it does look like on average they are more angular in profile so I'll update my chair base to match.

Regarding the TV, I think it might be built off of something like this slide projection TV or a newer version of this Bell & Howell Projection TV. It's the 45 degree angle thing on the side of the viewer and the slide projector-like movement that suggests a projection TV. But I don't know what exactly it was based off of so your guess is as good as mine :)

Hello! I found out about this BBS just a few weeks ago.
(Hard to believe, I know.)
I have been a life long fan of STAR TREK. I grew up on TOS (I am 58 years old).
I worked in Engineering for 31 years full-time, and retired at the end of 2017.
During that time (for 20+ years) I was drawing, printing, and selling decals part-time. I build scale models; the decal business started from my desire to make my own markings for my models. People liked my work and wanted copies.
Five months after I retired I had a stroke.
I draw mostly for myself now, my own projects, interests, ideas, etc.
For the past few months I have been drawing my own interpretation of the deck plans for the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE. My starting point was the FJ plans. I am governed by 3 criteria:
1. The details of the ship's layout as relayed in THE MAKING OF STAR TREK.
2. What was see and hear on-screen in the original 79 episodes.
3. The details visible on the 11-foot studio model.
Happily, the conclusions I came to - with respect to the layout of key features in the ship - parallel many of the design ideas I am finding in this BBS.
I will post this same message in several threads, so as to initiate conversations and/or private messages.
I have posted a few images in Facebook. I will post here too, as soon as I familiarize myself with how this BBS works.
I am most interested in communicating with WARPED9, BLSSDWLF, and ROBERT COMSOL.

Thank you.

Jim Botaitis

Apologies!
I am new, not just to this BBS, but to BBS-ing.
I did read the rules.
I did not understand how (or where) to introduce myself, or even if I need to do that.
I did not know how to demonstrate that I like a subject, or a drawing, or another member's words.
I did not know how to keep track of favourite topics, or conversations.
I noticed that there are categories for CSI too. I like CSI. If I post there, should I not introduce myself, but just jump right in?
Thank you.

In answer to this, the short answer is YES. ;)
If you have something to add to an existing discussion thread, just post it.
No need for introductions, since it should be about the post, not the poster.

As I said in the other thread, please don't post in dead threads where the original poster isn't around anymore to respond. @blssdwlf hasn't logged on to the board in over a year, so it doesn't seem like they will be able to see posts directed at them. Should @blssdwlf return one of these days, they are welcome to contact me should they want to reopen this thread. Thank you. :)

Howdy y'all. It's been a while - so long that I hadn't realized it's been more than a year. So I've have a little more free time to pick up where I left off and am re-learning my software and will get back to doing some rendering

And a belated welcome to Jim (already PM'd him a couple of weeks ago when I started to catch up on all these threads.)
