Bleach - Anime Disscussion (Spoilers)

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

The translation is worse: Birdy the Mighty: Decode 2. The show, however, isn't bad it's science fiction and revolves around a kid who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was killed by an alien Federation Investigator Birdy Cephon tracking alien criminals on Earth. In order to keep him alive while they make him a new body her superiors have put his consciousness into Birdy's body (also as punishment for her recklessness.). This is the 3rd installment in the franchise. The first was a short mini-series from the 90's and last year it was revived and expanded with Decode and this year we got Decode 2. Decode revolves around an alien criminal plot to test a devastating weapon on the "primitive" inhabitants of Earth. While Decode 2 revolves around Birdy investigating the whereabouts of escapees from a prison ship, but somebody is killing them off brutally one by one.

Anyway, yeah, the Japanese are fond of "Engrish", I believe the correct term is. Random bits of English thrown in songs or titles for no real reason at all other than it sounds foreign or cool. Just like if you travel to the southern states here you'll find ransom senseless Spanish all over the place.

^Thanks for the info dump.

Honestly, the hardest part of watching anime for me is deciding what to watch in the first place when I don't have the time to sift through anything or everything to start with. It would help if I could read at least a little Japanese, but I have no real facility for languages and it doesn't help when the titles are so nondescriptive to me as an English only speaker.

Any other good series you would like to recommend? I'm currently on the look out for something with a good story hook. Or just something good period.

I've seen: Iresponsible Captain Tylor, Cowboy Bebop. Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Bleach, Hellsing, Slayers, Ranma 1/2, DBZ & Sailor Moon.

Other than those, I'm pretty lacking in terms of having seen an entire series run.

I've seen pieces and parts of others, but never had the time to collect them all up then sit down and watch them all from begining to end.

Thanks in advance for the help. (And hopefully not judging my lack of anime experience too harshly.)

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Well, I think we've talked about it before here but whenever I'm looking for an anime I use ANN's Encyclopedia. I of course don't mind helping out one bit either.

Personally as far as recent things go I would highly recommend:

Kara no Kyoukai (The Garden of Sinners) Movie Series- A series of 7 supernatural horror/thriller films revolving around Touko Aozaki, a skilled practitioner of magic known as a Magus, who through circumstances has gained two new employees. The first is Mikiya Kokuto who gathers information for her and the other is Shiki Ryogi, a beautiful but deadly girl with a split personality, special eyes, and a penchant for murder. As a magus, it's one of Touko's duties to quietly take care of those who would use magic or other supernatural powers recklessly. The series is told out of order purposely though for some reason but most of the movies are their own self contained stories so it doesn't matter much.

Rideback- In a future world the planet has been all but taken over by a radical terrorist organization known as the GGP. They used a revolutionary form of millitary vehicle which current governments were unable to combat called the Rideback, motorcycle/mecha hybrids. After an accident where she breaks her ankle during a performance Rin Ogata becomes disenchanted and quits ballet dancing. Later in college she comes across a club dedicated to recreational and competitive Rideback racing. She soon finds that her high-tuned senses of balance and agility from her ballet career makes her a superb natural on a Rideback and she finally finds her new niche in life and becomes enchanted with a model of Rideback called Fuego, which seems to be more than what it seems. However, through a course of events Rin's noble intentions lead her to be labeled as a terrorist by militaristic government forces and she finds herself in a lot of trouble.

I also have a few overall favorites which you may want to try like:

Monster (Mystery/thriller as well as a medical drama)
Planetes (Science Fiction, drama About a bunch of space trash collectors)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Science Fiction police drama)
Haibane Renmei (a philosophical and psychological drama)
Black Lagoon/Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (Action series)
Elfen Lied (sci-fi and horror)
Kurenai (action series and character drama)
Rumbling Hearts (romantic drama)
Infinite Ryvius (science fiction, best described as "Lord of the Flies" in space)
When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koroni)/Higurashi no Naku Knroni Kai (mystery/horror)

I can help you find them too, if you have trouble. PM me and I can point you in the right direction. For instance Kara no Kyoukai, Kurenai, and Rideback are not licensed here yet.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

What I would like to recommend is the series D.Gray-Man. It is 103 episodes long. In many ways it is a darker version of Bleach. My husband and me watch it at the moment in the evenings after our daughter is in bed because I would not recommend this series for younger children to watch, even under supervision as we do with Bleach.

We haven`t finished it yet but we are close: Yesterday we watched episode 97. So far we both think this series is amazing. It hasn`t got the very sophisticated world building of Bleach but is an excellent mix of action and character development. Some of these stories are extremely dark but very well written. But there is some good humour too.

If the main character Allen Walker survives the series, I will start getting these books and DVDs too. My husband already ordered the soundtracks.

Another series I would like to recommend is Minami-ke which is a very different series compared with Bleach and D.Grey-Man. It is a light comedy series about three sisters, just relaxing good fun. The third season started recently. The stories are still funny although the artwork has suffered and we are still not quite used to these changes.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Awesome, thanks guys.

I'll check out the links and see what I can track down on my own (now that I have Titles it should be a bit easier.)

If I run into trouble though, with finding Licensed Series or the like, I'll let you know.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

I would also recommend checking out D.Gray Man. Its fun and surprisingly adult at the same time.
Other series I recommend:
Ga-Rei: Zero; A Story about a bunch of people with supernatural abilities fighting monsters for the government (Warning, this one can be pretty depressing). Its only 12 Eps, so its pretty short.
Shakugan no Shana; A Highschool Student died during a fight between a girl and some strange creatures, but he gets a limited time to continue to live as a "Torch", some sort of replacement for an actual human being. Very nice anime, there are two seasons with 24 eps each.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

I just want to add that we have just watched the rest of D.Gray-Man. It is excellent and has an ending I was hoping for: It is an end but also a beginning. That means the writer/s could easily continue the series but if they don`t it doesn`t leave the viewer disappointed.

Coming back to the topic of this thread: Wikipedia published some new titles with teasers. This flashback part could very well develop into one of my favourite Bleach stories.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

I also enjoyed D.Grey-man and I also like where and how it ended, although the initial 20-something episodes of the series were kind of boring. It did eventually pick up and become really great though. It ends like it does because of that pesky persistent problem most anime companies over in Japan have of starting an anime adaptation before the source material has finished and catching up. This problem literally kills a series depending on how it's handled. These kind of things wouldn't happen if they actually learned to wait and adapt the story once the manga or novels are done with. There'd be a lot more quality series out there if they had a little more patience.

Speaking of DGM, the first box set actually comes out later this month here in the US. Unfortunately at this point the company that is bringing it over only has the first 50 episodes. Hopefully enough people buy it so they'll buy the whole thing. I know I'll be picking it up when they release it.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

I don`t buy half season boxed sets. I prefer the full set. I could already pre-order Bleach season 3.1, 3.2 and 4.1 here in Britain but I wait until the third full box is ready to be pre-ordered. Maybe I will be lucky and Britain will even put two boxes out this year, seasons 3 and 4!

The full sets here in Britain are beautiful with nice artwork. I have seen the half seasons in shops packed all together in one plastic box with unappealing artwork as cover.

There is no sign of DGM in Britain yet on DVD. I found the announcement at Amazon.com too but I am waiting until the full box is available. It seems in that case the USA will be faster which means I will get the US version.

If there was any filler material in DGM I didn`t notice it. I can`t think of any episode in that series I didn`t like. Yes, the start was a bit slow but I didn`t mind. I think the start was good but, yes, it got so much better!

I think Bleach does a good job with the fillers, certainly nowadays. The Bount story is not popular with everybody but my husband and me, we both like it. It seems the New Captain story is more of a hit. I certainly prefer the Captain story to the part of the Hueco Mundo story with Nel and her slapstick companions. I got so fed up with it!

But I understand that if the filler is bad and this is getting on for a long time, it can kill a series.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

^I think (and therefore should stress, do not know for certain) that the Nel in Heuco Mundo Arc was fillerzied by stretching Manga Arc material into the slapstick stuff we saw.

Those characters are important, but I don't think the manga would've wasted THAT much time with the inane crap they showed during the series.

But then I may also be wrong about that.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

The latest German Bleach Manga is issue 33 and I had a look. Unfortunately there is still a lot of the slapstick gang in the Manga but it seems you are right, it seems to have been stretched in the Anime.

I don`t think these characters are important at all. I certainly don`t consider them to be important at this time but I see them as an annoyance. My six-year-old daughter loves Pesche and is delighted each time he appears. I must admit, I laughed about the infinite slick idea too but the rest was more cringe worthy than funny.

Something interesting I found out about DGM: The Mangas are continuing where the TV series left off. The English translations haven`t reached that point yet but I have another reason now to buy these books too.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Yeah, DGM is still ongoing in manga form, although I read that the author has become really sick and is taking time off from drawing it so progress on it has halted as well. That's just something I heard from somebody else online though so you yourself can decide how much faith to put in the rumor.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Contains spoilers for episode 209

This is another excellent episode. The start up answers one question: What is the official translation? Vizoreds or Vizards? I liked Vizards more and I welcome it that the Bleach Anime used it this time.

Nine years have passed since episode 208 and I could see again how interesting this story is. It is obvious that each coming episode will move a bit close to “present day” and give more background at each step. This is very well done and I hope it will continue this way.

It gives a bit more background to people we haven`t seen very often like Shuhei Hisagi, the guy with the number 69 tattoo and the three parallel scars on his face. It seems his origin has something in common with Renji and Rukia. Where his tattoo comes from is a good story. And we learn more about some of the Vizards. Because the Vizards will probably play an important part also after the Hueco Mundo chapter, this makes them more interesting and complex.

Before Aizen faked his death nobody except his followers had any idea how dangerous that man is. I think this episode already gives an insight how he uses his abilities to murder without revealing his true nature.

The next episode should reveal more.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Actually, weren't the murders carried out with what seemed the blind guy's bankai?

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with the idea that it was Tosen based on what I saw, under Aizen's command of course.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

It looked like some kind of combination of both their abilities. Inside it looked like Tousen's but the outside had Aizen's ability to conceal the person by making them invisible. I don't recall Tousen being able to do that. No clue who it is, guess we'll have to wait until the next episode. It does reek of one of Aizen's "experiments" though so I'm sure he's involved.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

^Most Definitely.

Side Question: Does anyone know what the White Coats of the 4 guys from 9th Squad said on the back? I almost thought they were captains until they started taking orders at first.

The one with the goggles and mask, they never say WHO he is. I am thinking he is Kaname Tosen, just with a different Hairstyle and Mask over his face. They seemed to go out of their way NOT to say his name in this latest episode. I bet he is the one who is betraying Squad 9.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

I was wondering about that, too.

I think the murders were definitely team work. My guess is Aizen also chose Tosen as his follower so that he can use Tosen`s ability to hide himself better. I am sure when Hirako tore town Aizen`s illusion it taught Aizen a lesson. And I am sure it will only be a matter of time until Aizen will go after Hirako. He is probably just looking for a good opportunity.

Re: Bleach - 206 (Spoilers)

So...

210 is up.

Wow.

The stage is set and it's all about to go down.

Kido is useful.
