Black Panther - Pre-release Thread

Deadpool did pretty well last February. I hope LEGO Batman will do well this February.

There's so many comic book movies coming out now, it's impossible to fit them all in the summer, and they seem to do well regardless of when they release so it shouldn't matter really.

I would prefer a release between April and August, or October and December.

I find it disgusting that "Black Panther" is the only MCU film that was given a February release. And if "Deadpool" was released in February, that tells me that the studio originally didn't have high expectations for it. And I can only assume that the MCU has low expectations for "Black Panther".

You're random conspiracy theories never fail to amuse. Logan was released on 1st March and did just fine, only a few weeks after BP's current release date.

Let's not also forget that Marvel has THREE films out in 2018 - Black Panther, Avengers Infinity War and Ant Man & The Wasp... spreading them out seems sensible to me.

I also wouldn't be surprised if BP has a decent sized role in Avengers 4 so it makes sense to give him a proper lead in after his taster in Civil War. I also feel it to be a bizarre fallacy that a good film can't make money wherever it's placed. The market is already super-saturated with tent-pole films, with films cannibalising each others box office, much to studio detriment.

Over recent years distributors have been spreading their wares out a little thinner across the year in an attempt to give a touch of breathing room for their properties. Can't see any different here. Even if Deadpool was a "fluke" it still shows that people will go and watch a good film (subjective there I know) no matter the time of year.

If you really want to stretch marketing opportunities, February is Black History Month in the US, and given Marvel are making a film with a largely black cast, a black director, a black writer I've no doubt (cynical or not) they will look at capitalising on their diversity as part of their production.

So, yeah, sure, Marvel must have no confidence in their new hero and product because, February...

Hugo - wants a trailer

Marvel have released the first poster and a new synopsis. This is definitely a much better poster than the mess that was the last Spider-Man poster, it's simple but gets the point across very well.

Well, for some places, February is bad...it is winter, but past Christmas Break, so either work or snow can prevent people from going to the movies.

But, I didn't think of it...but perhaps you're right that February was actually strategic, particularly for this movie. Hopefully we'll get much more hype after Thor... from what I have been reading, this will be a really good movie. Definitely on my mustsee list

How is February a strategic release for "Black Panther"? That month is considered a grave yard for movie releases.

If I were Chadwick Boseman, I would feel insulted by the MCU.

And back when 'The Scorpion King' was released in April, they sad the same thing - and suddenly you saw some bigger films releasing in April over the next few years.

If the film is good/entertaining; and has decent marketing prior to release, and interest is generated, audiences will go see it. There's no thought of: "Hey, it's February. I CAN'T go see a film like this in February..." ;)

I've never read the comics so the part about using a front of being a third world country seemed weird. I could also do without another slo-mo shot of a character flipping around a vehicle (along with the sub bass drops or whatever they call that) but all-in-all it looks interesting. It's nice to see some natural looking colors in comparison to some movies.

That teaser trailer was very good. I think this is going to be a big movie.

Am I the only one who thought it was interesting that they had Gollum and bilbo in the same room again? Now I want both of them to meet Doctor Strange in Infinity War

I think that's a new twist. I don't think I've heard of Wakanda being called a "third world country" before.
That's kinda how many white AMericans view ALL countries in Africa. I think this will be an interesting and educational development

February is no longer the graveyard. Instead, it's for hidden gems (Kingsmen, Deadpool, etc.). Basically, the plan is for the movie that lasts many weeks. It's banking on doing better than Pacific Rim 2 and possibly coasting until Tomb Raider if not Ready Player One.

I know little about Black Panther, but the casting and the director alone has me very excited about the film. This trailer takes that excitement up a several notches. I can't wait.

Nope, you weren't. That was brilliant. :D

And I've been hoping for a Freeman/Cumberbatch reunion twice over since Freeman was cast for Civil War.

All of that. And again, because it clearly needs to be repeated, February is Black History Month.

You whine and complain about way to many insignificant little things. Do you even enjoy life, or are you really that miserable all the time?

Anyway, seemed pretty cool to me. Definatly Marvel, but also loads of unique ellements. I'm giving this one a shot.

I think that's a new twist. I don't think I've heard of Wakanda being called a "third world country" before.

The original idea was that it was an advanced civilization that remained hidden in the African wilderness, a version of the classic lost or hidden city trope of 19th- and 20th-century adventure literature and pulp fiction. However, not only is that trope an antiquated and simplistic portrayal of Africa, but in this day and age, the idea that any country anywhere could keep its very existence hidden from the rest of the world is untenable. Since the MCU tries to feel like it belongs in our world, it's evidently retconned it so that, rather than hiding its existence, Wakanda hides its true wealth and sophistication.

And that's good, because the old Western stereotype of Africa as some vast wilderness in which any advanced society (whether Wakanda or DC's Gorilla City) must be a fantasy realm unknown to the world is antiquated, racist BS. Africa is the most geographically, ethnically, and politically diverse continent on Earth, with a wealth of different cultures and a history that does include major empires that were advanced and powerful for their time, such as Mali and Songhay (without whose gold medieval Europe would never have had the wealth to build its own mercantile empire and eventually fund the Renaissance). I've been hoping this movie would give us a more realistic, less outdated portrayal of Africa than the Marvel comics and animated shows I've seen over the years, and judging from this trailer, it looks like it very well might.

Which is why I loved the the big city we saw in Age of Ultron. Showing us there's so much more than our simple Western version of clay huts on the plains.

Isn't this doing the same thing? That's why I was surprised they went this route with the world thinking they are a third world nation.
