Black Panther - Pre-release Thread

I have been wondering if the two characters were related! I at first assumed so. But no mention of it in the film and none I could find online. Seemed like an odd choice to give him the same name if they are not.

Of course, it's because they're both pre-existing comics characters who were created generations apart and were never intended to be in the same work. Thunderbolt Ross was created by Lee and Kirby way back in the debut issue of The Incredible Hulk in 1962 (and was previously seen in the MCU Incredible Hulk movie), and Everett K. Ross was created by Christopher Priest and Kenny Martinez in 1998 (actually debuting in Ka-Zar before becoming a Black Panther supporting character). Everett's Wikipedia article actually says it has "not as yet been revealed" whether he's related to Thunderbolt.

But yes, it is kind of awkward that they both happened to end up in closely associated roles in the same movie.

Yeah, I was surprised when they introduced Everett Ross and kept his established surname. Generally when something like that happens I expect one of the characters (usually the less prominent one) to have their name tweaked slightly in order to avoid confusion.

Further, Ross is a fairly common surname, too. I honestly didn't even notice. *shrug*

A year and a half early? At least wait to the one year mark or something.
This is a solid thread start up date as casting is underway. The Mods have frequently been acceptable to threads like this while the casting and pre-production is underway.

With the extra excitement for the character now that he's debuted this should make for a good thread to follow for the next 20+ months.

Yeah. It's the only thing I've seen where Martin Freeman didn't totally steal his scenes. This is a guy who's normally the most fascinating actor in the shot even when he's just listening and reacting. (Heck, perhaps especially then.) In Civil War, though, he just seemed extraneous. (And it's so weird that there were two unrelated characters named Ross in the same faction, Thunderbolt and Everett. Especially since they had somewhat overlapping story functions, so they could've easily enough conflated both Rosses into a single Ross.)

Yeah, during my first viewing, every time a character in Civil War referred to "Ross" doing something off-screen ("Ross is ordering us to stand down," etc.), my first thought was, "Why would Everett say/do that?" before realizing they were talking about ol' Thunderbolt Ross instead.

Wow, I honestly never noticed we got two unrelated characters with the last name Ross in the movie.

So that's why David Schwimmer just kept randomly popping in my head during the movie... :D

New info:
Danai Gurira is Okoye, head of the Dora Milaje.
Michael B. Jordan is Erik Kilmonger.
Lupita Nyong'o is Nakia.

Here's the Black Panther stuff from CBR's cover of the SDCC panel for Marvel Studios.
Wasting little time, Feige introduced "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler, noting that the film will start filming in January.

"I'm a big comic book fan," Coogler said. "in 2009, I went to my first Comic-Con and I sat way, way, way back there, so this is absolutely crazy to be looking at my people from this view. We're working crazy hard on the script right now." That led to the introduction of the Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman.

"Thank you for everything I've heard from the fans about the character, and what you hope to see in 'Black Panther,'" Boseman told the crowd. "Ryan has some beautiful things in store for us."

Coogler brought out more of the cast: Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan and "The Walking Dead" vet Danai Gurira, who will play Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje. Coogler confirmed that Jordan will play the film's villain, Erik Killmonger, and that Nyongo's character is Nakia. All three briefly expressed their enthusiasm for the film.

"Thank you for your energy," Coogler told the crowd

Are they actually going to call him "Erik Killmonger" in the film, or change it to something less on-the-nose? Jessica Jones made enough cracks about the name "Kilgrave" -- this is even worse.

Well, I read about the character's history and he was originally named N'Jadaka before he changed it, so depending on where they start in his story we might get that name too or instead. Kilmonger seems to be the more recognizable name, so they could just be using that in announcement while he's actually N'Jadaka in the movie.

I do hope they call him N'Jadaka in the movie. "Erik Killmonger" is an awful name even for cheesy comic books.

Well, Erik Killmonger is an alias he created and chose for himself, if I understand correctly, so it doesn't have the "gee, what a coincidence" problem of something like Sinestro or Von Doom.
