Black Panther - Pre-release Thread

Holy crap, I heard people in a local store talk about BP showings at the only theater near my town, and after checking the info I have to bring this up:

In my area Black Panther is getting one showing a day for the first week, then a second (3D) showing for (presumably) the rest of its run, with a second 3D showing on Sat/Sun. Its a 5 screen theater, and its still showing fucking Jumani. I have never seen this theater keep anything but the biggest movies for more then a month, much less two months like Jumanji. Star Wars even left the theater before Jumanji. So, while Jumanji, Peter Rabbit, 15:17 Paris and 50 Shades Freed all get at least two showings a day every day (with Jumanji having 4 every weekday until next week when it goes down to 2), BP gets one showing a day everyday for the first week, then 1 normal and 1 3D showing everyday after that, with 2 3D showings on Sat/Sun.

I don't even want to see it in theaters, but this is ridiculous. I've never seen another movie treated like this. Even b-grade movies get 2 showings a day not counting 3D, and this is a Marvel movie. A Marvel movie releasing alongside very little competition, at that. I get that (looking at the census) my county's population is only 0.8% people of African decent (I didn't know it was that low before looking it up), but its a fucking MCU film. Its a mainstream movie, people of all races will probably be going just as much to it as they did to other MCU films.

Yeah, it will do less then Thor where I live, it just will. But there is absolutely no way the movie doesn't deserve the normal number of showings even around here. It certainly will end up making a good amount of money, definitely more then whatever pennies Jumanji is pulling in almost two months after it came out.

Something is very strange about your area because the movie is trending toward a $200 million opening weekend - and that ins't all "Africans". Also Jumanji is currently getting a lot more money than Star Wars (though Star Wars obviously made a lot more overall) and that's why they are still showing it.

BTW it's not very hard to do this research this days - Jumanji made $10 million last weekend, not pennies.

I just realized..there is such a lack of merchandising for Black Panther, other than a few T-shirts..is there anything else out there? Toys? Backpacks? Pencil boxes?

Definitely did NOT see any signs in the clothing section, like they still do for Justice League or Batman Vs Superman for the past year.

Which is crazy, since Black Panther, in my prediction, will be #3, after Avengers and Star Wars.

Yeah, my entire point was that Black Panther isn't limited to a smaller demographic, so it doesn't make sense for the BP showings to be limited in the only theater in my area just because there aren't many people of African decent living in the county. Nice job trying to imply something sinister there, BTW, especially when my point was the exact opposite.

So, you think Jumanji is making enough to deserve 4 showings a day two months after release, while Black Panther is only getting one showing a day for its entire opening week? I'm not saying it didn't deserve to make money, or that its not still making money (although it sure as hell isn't outselling TLJ in ticket sales). I'm saying that 4 showings a day for 2 damn months is plenty, and Black Panther sure as hell deserves to take some of the screen time away from the movie that has definitely made most of its money right now, especially in an area like mine where there is literally only one theater in the entire county. This isn't a second run theater in a big city, its a 5 screen theater serving a whole county, with a 50 minute drive to the next closest one. Jumanji shouldn't be taking 4 showings a day when BP is only getting one.

The new Jumanji movie is surprisingly entertaining. Black Panther is a much better film (having seen both), but Jumanji is hardly the trash one might assume.

I'm not trashing it. I'm just pointing out that its been two months, and is now the longest run for a movie I can remember the theater having. Jumanji doesn't need to leave, but it should give up at least two of its four daily showings. It will be giving two up a week after BP comes out, but only one seems to be given to BP (as a 3D showing) and the other is presumably going to either Peter Rabbit or 15:17 Paris. Most movies that come to this theater get four showings a day if they're big enough (with sometimes 2-3 showings for less popular stuff like 15:17 Paris, etc), usually split between 2d and 3d. I literally can't remember any movie getting only one showing a day ever, even on its last week of showings. BP is getting that for all of week one.

I'm just saying that something is definitely screwed up with the local theater. Knowing my area, there is really only one reason that BP specifically is getting treated this way. Whether its the management being prejudiced against the movie themselves or just thinking they'll get a lot less people because of the cast, BP is almost certainly getting screwed over because its a movie with a cast of actors of predominately African decent.

There is no other explanation for the treatment of BP, based on how the theater has always done things as far back as I remember. I'm not a fan of the movie, like I said before I wouldn't watch it in theaters even if I could so the lack of showings doesn't effect me, but this is really messed up. But, there is no other explanation, and its really weird because I've never really seen anything like this in my area before. I honestly think the movie will still make a lot, definitely enough to deserve more showings. I do know the area well enough though that I'm not shocked that something like this could happen, just surprised that the theater would be dumb enough to treat any MCU movie like this.

I can agree with the first part of your question without agreeing with the second. Black Panther definitely deserves to be shown more in your theater. I'm just saying that it's not unreasonable for Jumanji to be getting "4 showings a day two months after release."

Have you seen some of the other crap that got released over the last month? Check out Rotten Tomatoes.com and box office mojo, and you'll see that Jumanji is one of the few money-makers getting decent reviews right now.

None of that here. Agreeing with you. That theater will lose lots of potential income.

Maybe not that many showings, but it's making tons of money even now. Last weekend - Jumanji $10 million, TLJ $1.4 million. Also, The Rock isn't really white... (half black half Samoan) If racism is the cause of your theater not showing Black Panther, why doesn't it affect him?

Yeah, and not just any MCU movie, but one that is trending to become the third highest grossing of them all...

I love how you think that hidden cities with secret technologies is "authentic Africa".

There may never have been a more appropriate use of an emojii. Many consider hip hop and it's surrounding culture to be the most pervasive American cultural export in history. You would be hard pressed to find a country in the world that has not been touched by it in some way. In most countries rap and hip hop culture are flourishing. Since the roots of rap stretch back to Africa, using rap is BP in infinitely appropriate.

I've been listening to "Stars" for a while now and that is a great song.

If South Korea can make strong use of hip hop and rap, surely an fictional African country can.

I only know that what I've heard in the odd tv documentary, and looking up traditional African music online, sure as hell doesn't bring up rap, hip hop or anything remotely resembling it, but whatever. I sure as hell don't know anything about that topic. So Black Panther is going to have a shit soundtrack that doesn't resemble anything African sounding that I can find. A lot of modern movies have shit soundtracks. Plus, I guess if I can believe that there is a secret, super advanced country hiding in plain sight, I can believe that the same country has crap taste in music.

Actually, to be fair, I doubt any "Wakandan" music would involve rapping, that's just movie soundtrack stuff. Rap is shit but its popular shit, and its in everything. The BP trailer was more obnoxious with it then most, but I doubt the movie itself is going to be filled with it. I probably won't be seeing it in theaters anyway (no one else I know has any interest in it, except my brother but neither of us can drive so we won't be able to see it), so the mute button will take care of anything too annoying in the film itself by the time I get to see it.

Have no NOT read what he said...it is a 5 screen theater, with 5 movies... for a movie that has now been out nearly TWO MONTHS, they can take it down a notch, especially wiht a movie coming out that has broken many PRE_sale records. Kirk55555 is right -- it should be the one taken up the majority of showings.

None of that here. Agreeing with you. That theater will lose lots of potential income.

Most of the characters are white, so the movie doesn't "feel" black or "ethnic". I believe there is a "rainbow of racism"... many liberals even seen to have a certain amount of diversity they seem to handle. That is why white liberals live int he same neighborhood as white conservatives -- i.e. not mine!

Oh..just checked my local theater, www.Chatham14.com on the SOuth Side of Chicago. Now, it is an African AMerican neighborhood, so some bias...but Black Panther is showing in HALF of the 14 screens, and 7 other movies taking up the rest. So Kirk's local theater seems to be doing something wrong...i mean, for January that made sense. But starting TODAY???

Kirk55555, if it makes you feel any better about the BP, and there were only a couple scenes where I noticed any hip hop or rap, and both times it was ambient music that a character was listening to rather than taking the place of the score. Most of the music was orchestral score, and a lot of it did have a bit of an African tribal flavor to it.

He already made up his mind, and will not change it back.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. There's some spotty CGI towards the end that precludes me giving it a perfect score, but it's still probably top five or six MCU films.

The thursday preview numbers are pretty amazing: Almost double what Deadpool made in the same month, second highest thursday preview gross in the entire MCU (only 2 million behind Age of Ultron, just slightly more than Civil War). I expected this movie to do well, but wow, that's incredible.
