Black Panther - Pre-release Thread

I don't really much grok the Civil War backlash. It feels like Marvel was on a high note there, it felt like it atoned for the 'sins' of Ultron.
It simply didn't feel like it added much. The conflict felt very forced and then split off in to a whole different movie. The inclusion of a third party basically manipulating the civil war was very odd to me.

Sell it to me. What am I missing? Because, at the end I went "What are you doing, movie?" Rewatching it didn't help.

I don't know what to say. I just thought it was an excellent movie. The story was really good, the characters worked well, etc.

Can personal taste change?

Definitely not when it comes to stuff like music, much less anything else. Certainly not at age 27. If we're talking about going from a kid to a teen to an adult, tastes can change then. But I'm not going to stop hating rap any more then I'm going to start start hating fantasy.

Just as a point of clarification here, because I've seen this mentioned by a few in this thread, hip hop is the umbrella under which rap, hip hop music (other than rap), fashion, language, art, etc, fit. "Hip hop" is, many times, short for "hip hop culture", which encompasses all of the aforementioned.

It's not inaccurate to say that rap is hip hop or that Montel Jordan's "This Is How We Do it" is hip hop, but it IS inaccurate to say that these two are different genres. They're both hip hop.

Its all greek to me. I generally think about hop hop as all the modern music that isn't rap but sounds like its from the same music "family" and isn't what seems to be standard "pop" music. Its like how I hate, say, Beyonce's stuff just as much as I hate any particular rapper, but I know she isn't a rapper. Looking online, I guess she'd be R&B? I don't know. The label doesn't really matter to me since I dislike all of it equally.

That is very nebulous.

You and I have vastly different experiences then. At 33 my tastes are still adapting and changing.

I've pretty much had my tastes set in stone for a long time. I'll find new stuff to enjoy, but all from categories I already like.
Yeah, my tastes a bit more fluid, from food (use to hate eggs and spaghetti) to music (Use to hate country music and anything electronic). On and on it goes.
Found a Shakespeare quote that I think you can appreciate though :D

I just impulse bought a jar of kimchi at the supermarket this weekend which I never would have imagined a year ago but at the same time I often thought it would be great to be more limited in tastes. I can never find enough time for all my interests and would love to have a more narrow focus so I can't really knock fives here.

I'm not knocking him. Different strokes and all that. I just found the age difference amusing, since they are 27 and all locked in and I'm 33 and trying new things...I'm genuinely interested in why the difference.

I'm 30 and I'm still finding new things I like, and working on expanding my horizons.
For a long time I read almost nothing but tie-in books, except for the occasional really big thing that everyone was reading like Harry Potter, and it's just in the last few years that I've finally started trying new genres and finding new things to enjoy.
EDIT: I just spotted a potential spoiler in the trailer for the LEGO Marvel Superheros 2 Black Panther movie DLC.
A couple times we see Black Panther working with someone else in a Black Panther suit, and it looks different from both his and Killmonger's suits. The article about it also mentions Shuri, but I didn't notice her, so I think that might have been her in the other suit. She was Black Panther for a while in the comics, so it would make sense for her to get her own suit in the movie.

Well, it probably varies by individual. I'm not like that. I mean, I'll read books and watch movies not from established things I like, but they're still in the established genres I like. Books I'm more picky about, I read a good deal but can count on one hand the number of books not from established franchises I read a year.

Just to be clear Kirk, I'm not trying to pick on you with these questions, I'm just trying to understand you.

Sooo...has anyone other than me actually listened to the soundtrack yet?

I'm not usually a fan of hip-hop myself, but I went in with an open mind and, after a few listens, I enjoyed about half of it. The two singles, "All the Stars" and "Pray For Me," stand out the most, but I also enjoyed "Black Panther," "I Am," "Bloody Waters" (especially when you pay attention to the lyrics), "Redemption Interlude," and "Redemption."

The rest of the album, I'm more indifferent about than anything else because I'm not really the target audience. Overall, I'm curious to see how the songs flow with the film and the film's score.

Saw this last night and enjoyed it but didn't love it. It was very solid.

Guessing Wakanda's tech sharing is where Iron Man develops his nanotech suit for infinity War from. They're so far ahead of everyone technologically (bar the Guardians of the Galaxy) it's crazy.

Just got back from Black Panther, and I give it a big thumbs up. It's definitely one of the strongest "origin" movies from the MCU. (Assuming you count it that way.)

Can't wait to put it on the shelf. But I'll be moving it to right after Civil War, before Ragnarok.

For the record, I just saw Black Panther (great movie) and I didn't even notice any hip hop while watching it. It should be there somewhere - I saw some obvious song listings in the credits - but I honestly could not tell you where in the movie it was supposed to be, so it wasn't exactly prominent. The only modern music that stuck out in the whole movie was the K-Pop playing in some of the South Korea scenes.

Now the score itself has some hiphop influences, definitely, but it's (almost) all instrumental and its very heavily fused with african instruments and more traditional styles, so it really didn't feel like hiphop at all. It was also pretty great, for the record.

Don't you get tired of the same old thing all the time?

The fact that I'm watching technically 7 new shows as they air and about 2 old shows (that I haven't seen, but aren't brand new) right now says I don't get bored. The only "problem" is that 8 of those shows are anime, and other one is Black Lightning, so I watch basically no new live action sci fi/fantasy nowadays, which is why I made (very definitely failed) attempts to find new stuff in those genres. I do find new stuff to watch, and really lumping it under "anime" as if they're all the same story or genre makes it seem more similar then it is. But, sometimes I feel like watching something like the Sci Fi and fantasy I've watched before, so I make poorly thought out threads on literally the last forum I should go to for sci fi/fantasy recommendations and just end up having a worse time then if I'd watched nothing at all.

But, hey, I have totally given up on there ever being a good live action sci fi/fantasy show again in my life time, so I've gotten past all of that. I'll stick to new SF/F movies and stories in other types of media then live action. The golden age of live action SF/F on TV is dead, and I've come to terms with that. I'll just rewatch stuff like Firefly, the various Trek series, etc if I want some live action sci fi.

Well, for me I'm still pretty much done with it. The soundtrack stuff already killed my enthusiasm for the movie, plus I just found out its directed by the guy who did Creed, which I couldn't bring myself to get through (and I really enjoy Rocky I-IV and Rocky Balboa). So yeah, I'll watch BP when I don't have to pay for it, which will probably be October-ish when the library gets it on DVD.

Posts like this is why people suspect you are trolling. Stating things that you know damn well are unpopular opinions as facts irritates people. Nobody is telling you to like things. Just change the language when you talk about things you dislike.

Everything I say is my opinion. Its as subjective as the opinion of people who actually think there has been any good SF/F on TV in recent memory. In the end it doesn't matter what language I use, people will complain about my personal preferences regardless. I can't even say I dislike genres of music without certain people freaking out and accusing me of horrible things, and I made sure all the stuff about that was firmly stated as my opinion. So, I lose either way if I hold any opinion not popular with certain posters.

Text comes across as more hostile, opinion or not.
