Biobeds

Willieck

Commander

Why is it that all biobeds since TOS look like ironing boards. If I was ill I don't think I would be happy to spend any time on one. Apart from the fact that they look pretty uncomfortable I think that if anyone tried to turn over they would fall off unless they were restrained.

Same reason that homes and buildings of the future always have oddly-shaped doors in sci-fi movies and television shows. Weird shapes look futuristic.

^ Hmmm. Makes me wonder what the toilets look like.....

They have three sea shells where the toilet paper is supposed to be.
They never did tell me how to use the darn things. I had to spew much profanity prior to going.

Stallone once said that a crewmember on the film actually explained to him how the seashell thing was supposed to work. I think he must have been 'had', though. There's no way that would have been anywhere near as safe or sanitary as toilet paper!!

Basically he said that you use two of the shells as 'pinchers' and scrape what's left with the third. No, I don't buy it either. I always assumed that the shells had some kind of high frequency sonic generator that cleaned your ass out without you having to touch anything. Kind of like Trek's sonic showers.

As for the biobeds: They are probably a lot more comfortable than they look.

I agree, that crewmember got one over on Stallone.:guffaw:

We were never shown how the toilets work on Trek. But just remember, on a self-contained vessel like a starship, everything gets recycled.

The only time I remember toilets being mentioned in ST was in an early episode of Enterprise when the crew were answering some questions from children at home about their mission. One of the kids asked what happened to waste and Trip complained about having to answer a "poop" question. His answer was of course that everything gets recycled.

Back to the original question; Whenever I've been on a hospital bed, sick, post-op or otherwise I don't thrash around as much as I would at home. Maybe Starfleet psychologists realised this and, as space is limited on starships, designed these.
